But determined criminals are still managing to find other ways to steal cars, often by getting hold of the owner’s keys. And key theft is responsible for 40% of the thefts of vehicles fitted with a tracking system.

If the car travels 100 metres without the driver confirming their ID, the system will send a signal to an operations centre that it has been stolen. The hundred metres minimum avoids false alarms due to inaccuracies in the GPS signal.

Staff at the centre will then contact the owner to confirm that the car really is missing, and keep police informed of the vehicle’s movements via the car’s GPS unit.

Exercises

1.What’s the function of the remote immobilizer fitted to a car?

C To prevent the car thief from restarting it once it stops.

※ 细节题,对应法

文章第一段

Speeding off in a stolen car, the thief thinks he has got a great catch. But he is in for an unwelcome surprise. The car is fitted with a remote immobilizer, and a radio signal from a control centre miles away will ensure that once the thief switches the engine off, he will not be able to start it again.

2. By saying “The pattern of vehicle crime has changed” (Lines 1-2. Para. 3), Martyn Randall suggests that

B self-prepared tools are no longer enough for car theft.

※ 细节题,对应法及推测法

文章第二段

In the UK, a set of technical fixes is already making life harder for car thieves. “The pattern of vehicle crime has changed,” says Martyn Randall, a security expert. He says it would only take him a few minutes to teach a person how to steal a car, using a bare minimum of tools, but only if the car is more than 10 years old.

3. What is essential in making a modern car tougher to steal?

A A coded ignition key.

※ 细节题,对应法

文章第四段

Modern cars are far tougher to steal, as their engine management computer won’t allow them to start unless they receive a unique ID code beamed out by the ignition key. In the UK, technologies like this have helped achieve a 31% drop in vehicle-related crime since 1997.

4. Why does the tracking system set a 100-metre minimum before sending an alarm to the operations centre?

D To allow for possible errors in the GPS system.

※ 细节题,对应法

文章第六段

If the car travels 100 metres without the driver confirming their ID, the system will send a signal to an operations centre that it has been stolen. The hundred metres minimum avoids false alarms due to inaccuracies in the GPS signal.

5. What will the operations centre do first after receiving an alarm?

B Contacting the car owner.

※ 细节题,对应法

文章最后一段

Staff at the centre will then contact the owner to confirm that the car really is missing, and keep police informed of the vehicle’s movements via the car’s GPS unit.

第11篇 Internet-based Instruction网络教学

By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distance learning (DL), and among the larger schools, it’s close to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven’t heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants

degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. It enrolls 90,000 students, a statistic used to support its claim to be the largest private university in the country.

While the kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors post syllabi(教学大纲), reading assignment, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instructor is minimized or eliminated(消除) altogether. The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there’s the convenience promised by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas. But figures indicate(表明) that the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment (the hard work and loyalty)to the course. While dropout rate for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate for online students is 35 percent.

Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent(内在的) in the setup. In a survey conducted for

Cornell, the DL division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents(调查对象) expected the quality of the online course to be as good as the classroom course.

Clearly, from the schools’ perspective, there’s a lot of money to be saved. Although some of the more ambitious

programs require new investments in servers and networks to support collaborative software, most DL courses can run on existing or minimally(最低限度地) upgraded systems.

Notes: Collaborative software (协作软件),也叫做社会软件,是一类允许通过远程网络来一起工作在相同的文件和工程上的软件。

The more students who enroll in a course but don’t come to campus, the more school saves on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers, and maintaining parking lots. And, while there’s evidence that instructors must work harder to run a DL course for a variety of reasons, they won’t be paid any more, and might well be paid less. Exercises
