Skeptics(怀疑主义者) contend(主张,认为) that GM crops could pose unique risks to the environment and to health—risks too troubling to accept placidly(平静地). Taking that view, many European countries are restricting the planting and importation of GM agricultural products. Much of the debate hinges on(取决于) perceptions of safety. But what exactly does recent scientific research say about the hazards? The answers, too often lost in reports on the controversy, are served up in the pages that follow.

练习:

1. Paragraph 1 _____________

D Two Opposite Views on GM Foods

4 It’s easy to understand why. In a way, GM crops are invisible. You can’t see, taste or touch a gene inserted into a plant or sense its effects on the environment. You can’t tell, just by looking, whether pollen (花粉) containing a foreign gene can poison butterflies or fertilize plants miles away. That invisibility is precisely what worries people. How, exactly, will GM crops affect the environment—and when will we notice?

练习:

2. Paragraph 4 _____________

C Invisibility as the Key Reason for Public Worries

5 Advocates of GM, or transgenic crops say the plants will benefit the environment by requiring fewer toxic

pesticides than conventional crops. But critics fear the potential risks and wonder how big the benefits really are. “We have so many questions about these plants,” remarks Guenther Stotzky, a soil microbiologist(微生物学家) at New York University. “There’s a lot we don’t know and need to find out.”

练习:

3. Paragraph 5 _____________

E Potential Risks and Benefits of GM Crops

6 As GM crops multiply in the landscape, unprecedented(空前的) numbers of researchers have started fanning into the fields to get the missing information. Some of their recent findings are reassuring; others suggest a need for vigilance(警觉).

练习:

4. Paragraph 6 _____________

A Growing Researches on GM Foods

1 The world seems increasingly divided into those who favor genetically modified (GM) foods and those who fear them. Advocates assert that growing genetically altered crops can be kinder to the environment and that eating foods from those plants is perfectly safe. And, they say, genetic engineering—which can induce plants to grow in poor soils or to produce more nutritious foods—will soon become an essential tool for helping to feed the world’s burgeoning(增长迅速的) population.

练习:

5.Genetic engineering, according to advocates, ______.

B can induce plants to grow in poor soils

Skeptics contend that GM crops could pose unique risks to the environment and to health—risks too troubling to accept placidly. Taking that view, many European countries are restricting the planting and importation of GM agricultural

products. Much of the debate hinges on perceptions of safety. But what exactly does recent scientific research say about the hazards? The answers, too often lost in reports on the controversy, are served up in the pages that follow. 练习:

6. Critics argue that GM crops ______.

E have potential risks to the environment and health

7. Advocates say GM crops benefit the environment because they ______.

A require fewer toxic pesticides

第6篇 Nap Time 小睡的时间

1 Taking a nap is frowned upon (不赞成)by many people and is viewed as something for the elderly and children. Mention napping, you could be seen as lazy, depressed and unwilling to work.

2 However, taking a nap is one of the best but most underused(未充分利用的) tools for busy people to ease weariness(tiredness). The majority of people experience drowsiness(睡意,困倦) in the afternoon and notice their work efficiency and mood starting to slip(减退) and napping will help combat(fight) this.

3 There have been many famous nappers who swear by the midday snooze (nap) to keep them awake and alert. Famous nappers have included Richard Branson (英国亿万富翁), Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Lance Armstrong(著名自行车运动员), Winston Churchill and Leonardo da Vinci. No one can claim that these people didn’t achieve anything and spent all day napping.

4 Research on napping is constantly showing positive effects. The results suggest that napping can make you more alert, reduce stress and improve cognitive function compared to working all day without rest. Researchers at NASA(美国国家航空和宇宙航行局) showed that a 30-minute full nap increased cognitive function by 40%. The volunteers on the tests found that their memory improved as well as experiencing an increase in concentration. Those who didn’t nap would score lower on IQ test than those who did.

5 If you feel tired in the afternoon and from then on don’t perform at your best, I recommend taking a short power nap to get yourself feel alert and ready for work. You will feel rested an …… 此处隐藏:5662字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
