Joe, a Chinese American, got his doctorate in biochemistry(?物化学博?学位) in the US. He then went on to work as a scientist, under his real name, Xi Huang. But at the age of 40, he said

goodbye to the successful and highly paid job to risk out full-time into comedy.

In 2002, Joe performed his comedy for the first time at a sports bar. Most of the audience(观众) had been drinking heavily and Joe had to shout over the noise they made and also from the ball games on TV. Only several people actually listened to him. But as discouraging as that was, Joe refused to give up. He took comedy classes, polished his jokes

and his use of the English language, playing any local clubs that would have him. It wasn’t easy for Joe to work full-time in the daytime as a scientist while at night writing jokes or on the phone looking for chances to perform. As he got experience in entertaining audiences, his confidence built. He kept improving and even began getting paid for his comedy.

In 2005, he met Eddie Brill, a talent scout(星探) for The Late Show with David Letterman which isfamous as “Comedy Oscar”. With Eddie’s help, Joe went to the program, where he achieved big success. And he had been in the big time ever since. Joe had also been on national comedy tours and had one of his biggest gigs(现场表演) in 2010 performing for 2,400 reporters and top US officials including Vice President Joe Biden. For Joe, what happened after that was amazing. He had a never-ending calendar filled with show dates and was also looking into producing a TV situation comedy.

After becoming well-known in the US, he was invited to many universities in China to share his experience, and in 2011, his autobiography(?传) The Tao of Humor came out. Joe never thought about becoming such a successful comedian when he first went to study in the US. One of his

important motivations(动机) was that he wanted to put a more public face on the Chinese in the US. “There are already many Chinese scientists in America but not one comedian.” He once expressed.

On top of that, he went back to China where talk shows were just appearing. Now Joe is hosting a TV show called Is It True on CCTV.

82. According to Paragraph 4, why did Joe want to be a comedian in the US? A. Because he wished Chinese people to be highly regarded. B. Because comedians were more welcomed than scientists. C. Because there were too many American scientists like him. D. Because he went to study comedy in the US at a young age.

83. According to the passage, which of the following events won Joe the greatest success? A. Working as a biochemical scientist in the US. B. Performing on The Late Show with Dave Letterman. C.
