Unit 1 Confucius’ works are read by many people.

■Warm up by learning about object clauses.

In the sentence “Confucius’ works are read by many people.” are read is an example of present simple passive. Its structure is “ is/ am/ are +-ed”.

Now we go on to make as many similar sentences as possible.

■Read and listen.

On page 10 in the box is a dialogue between Mr. Jackson and Betty. Now let’s go on to read it first. While reading, try to: cut/ the sentence into thought groups, study the predicative, darken the 阅读过程中，断开/意群，观察谓语构成，圈出连词，摘录短语搭配。)

■ Find out all the present simple passive sentences.

There are many present simple passive sentences in the dialogue. Now go over it to find out all the present simple passive sentences.

■ Make present simple passive sentences.

Present simple passive sentences are made by structure of “is/ am/ are+ -ed”. Now you are to make as many present simple passive sentences as possible in pairs.

■ Act out the dialogue.

Next we are going to act out the dialogue. First we shall be acting in pairs. Then two best pairs will be selected. And they shall put on the dialogue in front of the class. OK? Go ahead.

■Close down by ask asking and answering conversation questions literature and books.

4. He's a lively and clever young boy.

6. My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead.

8. Tom is the hero of the story.

9. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him.

10. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom's best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the

story.

11. The themes of the story are to do with children growing up and becoming more serious.

12. Tom Sawyer is a great book.

13. It's only a story.

Type 2. He runs. 主语+不及物动词

1. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in the quiet streets of St Petersburg, Missouri.

4. He hides and watches for a time, and then suddenly he appears.

Type 3. He writes books. 主语+及物动词+宾语

1. Everyone thinks Tom is dead.

2. He decides to go to his own funeral.

3. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America.

5. Why do I think Tom Sawyer is a great book?

6. Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876.

7. But it's still read and loved by people all over the world today.

8. Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19 century.

9. Today it's thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature.
