If you would like to invite non-Canadian faculty members who hold permanent positions at universities abroad to York University in order to carry out research, they can enter Canada in two ways:

1. Visiting Professor (includes Associate Professors, Assistant Professors and Lecturers)

2. Post-Doctoral Fellow

You may also bring an academic in to conduct research as a Self-Funded Researcher.

Unlike Visiting Professors or Post-Doctoral Fellows, Self-Funded Researchers do not require temporary work permits in order to work at York University. None of these positions needs to be advertised, nor do they require Service Canada confirmations (Labour Market Opinions).

A Visiting Professor is an academic who accepts a position at York University for a period of not more than two academic years. The person must already work as a lecturer/professor in their home country (or have emeritus status), and must retain their permanent (continuous) position at the academic institution

abroad to which they will return following their visit.

If the Visiting Professor is a non-Canadian, the professor will require a temporary work permit in order to conduct any activities that could be construed as work (whether paid or unpaid).

To facilitate the issuance of a work permit, York University must provide a letter of invitation (or

appointment letter if a contractually limited appointment has been offered).

If the Visiting Professor will not be paid by the University, prior to his/her arrival, please consult with the Relocation Coordinator to discuss any medical coverage issues.

Before or during the visitor’s stay, if there will be changes to their duration of stay, financial support, work location, or type of activities to be carried out, please contact the Relocation Coordinator before implementing changes. A separate immigration procedure (and letter) may be required.

You should be exempt from confirmation of employment by Service Canada under Confirmation

Exemption Code C22 of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada manual. To qualify for this exemption you must:

a) remain at this University no longer than two academic years

b) retain a permanent position at an academic institute outside Canada

c) return to your permanent position following your stay. This exemption does not apply to summer school situations where Service Canada confirmation is required.

To enter Canada and obtain a work permit, Canadian immigration authorities will require the following:

This letter of invitation from York University (the host academic institution)

Letter from your home institution confirming that you retain and will return to your position

abroad, when your appointment at York University expires

Immigration Processing Fees

The fee for your work permit is $150 (CAD). A citizens of visa country

() must also obtain a temporary resident visa (TRV) in

order to enter Canada. The TRV processing fee charged varies depending on the type of application. The is available on the Citizenship and Immigration Web site.

Spouse/Partner Employment

Providing your work permit is valid for at least six months, your spouse/partner may apply for an open work permit without confirmation by Service Canada. There will be an additional processing fee of $150 (CAD). Your spouse/partner will need to provide evidence supporting his/her relationship to you. Health Care Insurance

Providing you hold a work permit that is valid for at least six months, you should normally be able to obtain coverage under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. If your work permit is valid for less than six months, it will be your responsibility to obtain and provide York with acceptable proof of private medical insurance.

Social Insurance Number and Payment of Financial Assistance

If you do not have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN), please obtain one or renew it after you have received your work permit. You must provide proof of SIN card application to the Records Department of York University. For information on SIN’s, please refer to the following web site: .
