expression, means “a man may lead a horse to the water, but he can’t not make him drink” , “三人共条牛,剩下光骨头” [13]10means “the common horse is worst shod” , “对牛弹琴,牛不入耳”[13]11 are equal to “sing psalms to a dead horse”. In some sense, the meaning of cattle in China is similar to that of horse in western countries. Carriage towed by horses is good traffic. War horse is another example, because it just like battle plane in nowadays.

3.2.2 The belief of religion

Religion is an important source of the proverbs. English and Chinese, the two nations are of different religious beliefs, so the metaphor of animals is different between English and Chinese proverbs. In China, Buddhism, Taoism have a long history, so many people are believers of “Buddha”, They believe that “God”,“神”control the world all around, so a lot of proverbs associated with animals in Chinese language. Such as “虎想吃山神爷,猴想欺如来佛” ,“吃狗肉,念三官经” ,“黄鼬看鸡无好心,虎带佛珠假慈悲”. However, in many Western countries, especially in Britain and the United States, people believe in Christianity, Christian

culture has already deep-rooted in people’s ideology. Nearly nobody never be familiar with the Bible. A lot of proverbs are just evolved from the Bible. “god temples the wind to the shorn lamb”“天无绝人之路”, “god gives every bird its food, but does not throw it into the nest”“天赐食物于鸟,但不投之于巢” which means we can't blame anybody, everything we should get by ourselves. Just like there is rice which can feed us, but we should plant them first.

3.2.3 Social psychology

People’s feeling, thought can be formed by the environment, emotion, especially social psychology. Different aesthetics and different point of view may cause the same animal having different cultural connotations. Aesthetic is self-reflection, self-recognition, is his inside spirit and activities in the nature. The importance of natural beauty is not beauty-self, but the feeling and character of people. Thus animals’ beauty is to harmonize with people’s character.

Both the Chinese and the English used to keep dogs, but they have different perspectives to how to keep dogs. So aesthetics created seems hard to be the same. Chinese culture focus on the negative characteristics of the dog, Chinese considers the dog lowliness. Such as the source of meat or used for watchdog. Most proverbs with “dog” is derogatory in Chinese culture. The negative figure of “dog” has already deeply carved in the Chinese Language. “狗仗人势” , “人模狗样” ,“捉鸡骂狗” ,“狗嘴吐不出象牙” all the proverbs express the dog is cheeky, bad friends, etc.

[12]12Other activities about “dog” are also used to describe bad guys. Such as “狗急跳墙” ,“好狗不挡道” [12]11. However, in western culture, dogs win people’s trust for their loyalty, meet people’s desire to friendship and the request of calling in good faith, giving them adequate psychological pleasure. The image of a dog is positive, so the words about “dog” are always taken along a complimentary sense, or neutral. We can see from “love me, love my dog”(爱屋及乌), westerners treat dog as their friends, or even one of their families. “a good dog deserves a good bone” means “论功行赏” . They consider the dog understanding our people’s meaning. Seeing eye dog and shepherd dog prove “dog is their faithful friends” to be true.

Chinese always treat swallow as a model for the study, the symbol of being not afraid of difficulties and obstacles, but perseverant, hard working, who courageously goes forward. But the Westerners are not disposed to swallow, there are some saying

was published in the Longman Modern English Dictionary, it is said that “the petrel, the son of storm” , foreshadowed the disaster, disputes, acts of violence or those who laugh at someone.

Chinese usually are afraid to seeing owl or listening its hooting, because of connection with bad luck or doom. They saw owl as ominous bird. On the contrary, the westerner thought owl is the symbol of wisdom. In the cartoon series, owl is very serious and accepted as a judge. “As wise as an owl” is often said among people’s daily lives.

3.2.4 The influence of literature

In English and Chinese languages, there are also a large number of proverbs from the history stories. These proverbs have concise construction and far-reaching meaning. They can reflect each national character in different cultures vividly. Aesop’s Fables is regarded as the father of west fable. The majority of stories about animals use personification, the short form, an appropriate metaphor, a vivid image. It must be a profound impact on English or even philosophy and literature and art all around the
