Take A Rational And Tolerate Way to ‖Rude Chinese Tourist‖

It can be easily found that Chinese people sometimes are criticized for misbehavior. Shortly, two events –a 15 –year-old student carving his name on a 3,500-year-old Egyptian temple and a mother letting her child defecate on the floor of an airport –which arose wide attention throught out the world. And domestic media always threw Chinese tourists into the center of public anger and criticism ,once there are some misbehavior happens. But are the Chinese tourists really so rude?

From my perspective, I agree with author’s opinion. We should regard these issues with more reason and impersonality .As the text points out ,twenty years ago western visitors to China were often accused of being rude and arrogant because they were not cooperative enough, always demanding THEIR rights. It is ironic that people are not aware of it, this is a common situation in cross-cultural communication. What we should do is taking a rational and tolerate way to this phenomenon

No one can deny the fact that misunderstandings arises when people from different backgrounds meet, and the visitors is often seen as an ―invader‖ intent on doing harm . Meanwhile, anger and criticism only cause embarrassment ; the only effective way is building bridges of understanding through changes made from both sides.

As is known that ,different countries have their own cultural background, different outlook on life and moral, so it is unwise to apprise their behaviors with the same criteria. When different cultures meet ,misunderstanding arises . For instance, Chinese tourists are considered as second worst tourists because of noise and a miserly attitude to tipping. However ,things are different in China, people do not have the custom of tipping waiters in service industry .But it doesn’t mean Chinese people don’t cherish the waiter’s service. They may just have behaved as they do at home .Therefore, they are also shocked when their behaviors hit the headline. Although the reputation of German is excellent , they can’t do everything perfect. A case can manifest, loudly blowing nose is believed a bad manner in China and Korea, while it’s extremely normal in German, misunderstanding is partly due to the lack awareness for foreign culture.

Some misunderstandings are sure to be caused by cultural differences. Cultural

differences also have origins As Zhao Yan Hong point it out, the difference between countries in value, makes the way of thinking or behavior of people are different in every country. Meanwhile Ming Hong, the professor of Wuhan University of Technology claim that the differences in value can be reflected on the thinking pattern. Value in the western country centralize the inpiduals, that’s to say, it stress out the ―self-interest‖. The starting point of this kind of thinking pattern is to realize and safeguard the interest and the dignity of the inpiduals. And everything is done based on it.

The differences of the thinking pattern between China and western countries can well explain the example taken in the text that western visitors are accused of being arrogant and rude because they were not cooperative enough. Western visitors don’t think what they had done is wrong, for they are always following the value they hold—personal interest is the most important thing. However in China, people think that collective interest is above everything. Because of that, Chinese will blame them for their being not cooperative enough.

In addition, not only the media in China but also foreign countries exaggerate the truth of it. So , in this case, these reports may have a bad influence among people all over the world. That’s why most of times, when it comes to the actions of Chinese people, bad impression comes. Further more, media’s exaggerate report is due to a lack of confidence of moral. As a developing country, Chinese feel inferior when they face the United States and western powers. When some tourists have misbehavior, they not only feel shamed but also report them severely. On the contrary, foreign media is more tolerate than ours. That means--a student of 15 years old carves her name on a Egyptian temple which owns 3500 years of history was sparked a heated criticism in China, it is unlike the Egypt.

As far as I am concerned, if Chinese and westerners can have a better awareness of cross culture differences, some misunderstandings can be avoided and a good result can be received. Take Haier, a successful company all over the world. Cultural differences can influence the operations of Multinational Corporations and even can decide whether it is successful or not. Haier in America lays ore emphasis on the

personalized management. AS face work is penetrated in every aspect of the relationship. We could not deny that the power of mianzi is big, and it’s one of the principles of behaviors. In America, inpidualism and self-respect is important. American staff couldn’t stand being criticized in public, which is common in China. Haier fully considered this point and give the staff enough care. This action won American staff’s respect and acceptance and they even, to a certain degree , accept Eastern culture. Haier’s better awareness of western culture has avoided many misunderstandings and gain a good reputation among America.

Last but not least, moral education and the cultivation of the environment awareness is a long-tern project .In the mid 19th century , American also littered garbage and spitted everywhere . But with the development of America , these manners are disappointing . Similarly, world should give Chinese time to get better instead of criticizing.
