Chapter 10 Intercultural Communication Competence I. Teaching Objectives

In this chapter, the teacher should enable the students to:

1. Understand intercultural communication competence.

2. Summarize the various components of intercultural competence.

3. Distinguish the dimensions of intercultural competence.

4. Master the strategies and skills for improving intercultural competence

II. Contents 1. Keywords

(1) Competent communication: It is interaction that is perceived as effective in fulfilling certain rewarding objectives and is also appropriate to the context in which the interaction occurs.(有能力的交际:有能力的交际被视为能够有效完成预期交际目标同时适合于具体交际语境的交际。)

(2) Intercultural communication competence: It refers to the ability to accomplish effective and appropriate intercultural communication between communicators of different cultures. (跨文化交际能力:跨文化交际能力是指一种在不同文化的交际者之间能够完成有效且得体的交际的能力。)

(3)Intercultural competence: It refers to the ability to become effective and appropriate in interacting across cultures”. It is the ability to understand and adapt to the target culture without ignoring the native culture. It also refers to the sensitivity to cultural persity.(跨文化能力:跨文化能力是指在跨文化互动交际中能够变得得体有效的能力。它是种在不忽视自身文化的同时能够理解和适应目标文化的能力,也是对文化多样性的一种敏感性)。

IV. Teaching Procedures

1. Lead-in case: Let students do Lead-in Case “What’s the matter with the gift?” and discuss the following questions:

(1) Why do you think the old woman appeared to be angry?

(2) How do you relate the old woman’s behavior to her culture?

2. Text A

a. Presentation: Pre-reading task

Let students do pre-reading task and think of the real meaning of intercultural communication competence.

b. Practice: The explanation of the text and activities

(1) Significance of Competent Intercultural Communication

Let students read “Significance of Competent Intercultural Communication” and then explain the main idea.

(2) The Imperative for Intercultural Competence

The need to understand the role of culture in interpersonal communication is growing. Teacher

will let students know the importance of intercultural competence from economic, technological, demographic, and social justice concerns.

c. Production: after-reading check

Let students analyze the cultural phenomenon can be reflected in the case “Signs in Another

Language”. And then teacher summarizes the key points shown in this case.

3. Text B

a. Presentation: Pre-reading task

Let students do pre-reading task and discuss the questions provided by the activity.

b. Practice: The explanation of the text and activities

(1) Communication Competence Defined

Let students discuss what communication competence is with their group members, and then

read the text to compare theirs with the one given in the text. At the same time they also should find the definition of competence communication. Then teacher summarize the two definitions and tell the differences.

(2) Intercultural Competence and Intercultural Communication Competence Defined

Let students read the text and find the definitions of Intercultural Competence and

Intercultural Communication Competence, and then ask them to do the question on the textbook.

c. Production: after-reading check

Let students do the brief analysis of the case “Demographic Analysis in USA” and then

teacher provides the answer to them. And suggest students to watch the films show on the textbook.

4. Text C

a. Presentation: Pre-reading task

Let students do pre-reading task and discuss the questions provided by the activity.

b. Practice: The explanation of the text and activities

(1) Inpidual Components of Intercultural Competence

Teacher will let students know the Inpidual Components of Intercultural Competence from

the following four aspects:

▲ Motivation

Let students do the quiz about Intercultural Willingness to Communicate Scale to check their

willingness to communicate interculturally, then they will understand motivation is an important aspect of developing intercultural competence

▲ Knowledge

Let students think of the meaning of knowledge, and then check the real meaning of

knowledge in the textbook.

▲ Attitudes

Teacher explains attitudes from three aspects -- tolerance for ambiguity, empathy, and

nonjudgmentalness, let students finish the activities in the textbook to further understand the aspect of attitudes.

▲ Behaviors and skills

Teacher explains the different levels of intercultural communication competence with the help of metaphors. And then tell what the levels of intercultural communication competence are.

(2) Contextual Components of Intercultural Competence

Let students read the text and fill in the diagram on page 10 to grasp the main idea of
