Make improvement in your studies and in your career. When at school, take classes outside of your major if you have time. After graduation, continue your education both in your field and in the area of general knowledge. Stay on top of ideas, developments, and new technology in your field by seeking out continuing education courses. Sign up for career-related seminars. Take single courses at a local college or community learning center. Some companies offer additional on-the-job training or will pay for their employees to take courses that will improve their knowledge and skills. If your company doesn't do so, you may want to set a small part of your income aside as a "learning budget". When you apply for jobs, you may want to ask about what kind of training or education the company offers or supports.

Talk to people of different generations other than yours. Younger people can learn from the experienced, broader

perspective of those belonging to older generations; older people

can learn from the fresh and often fundamental perspective of those younger than themselves. Even beyond the benefits of new knowledge, there is much to gain from developing mutual respect among the generations.

Dig into other cultures. Visit the home of a friend who has grown up in a culture entirely different from your own. Then, invite him or her to your home. Eat at a restaurant that serves food from a country you've never been to. Seek conversations with people of different races, religions, values, and ethnic backgrounds, asking them about their experiences. Travel to different countries. Travel nearby to different neighborhoods or cities around—they may seem as foreign as another country. Take a course that deals with some aspects of cultural diversities.

Develop a spiritual life. You can find spirituality in many places. You don't have to regularly attend a church to be spiritual, although that may be an important part of your spiritual life. "A spiritual life of some kind is absolutely necessary for psychological 'health'," says psychologist and author Thomas Moore in his book The Care of the

Soul. "We live in a time of deep separation, in which mind is

separated from body and spirituality disagrees with much of the world's teachings." The words soul and spirituality hold different meaning for each individual. Decide what they mean to you. Whether you discover them in music, organized religion, friendship, nature, cooking, sports, or anything else, making them a priority in your life will help you find a greater sense of balance in meaning. Experience what others create. Art is "an adventure of the mind" (Eugene Ionesco, writer); "a means of knowing the world" (Angela Carter, author); something that "does not reproduce the visible (可视的); rather, it makes visible" (Paul Klee, painter); "a lie that makes us realize truth" (Pablo Picasso, painter); a revealer of "our most secret self" (Jean-Luc Goddard, filmmaker). Through art you can discover new ideas and see old ideas in a new light. Explore all kinds of art and focus on any form that holds your interest. Seek out whatever moves you—music, visual arts, theater, domestic arts, performance art, film and television, literature, and more. Make your own creations. Bring out a creative artist in yourself. Take a class in drawing, or in some other art. Learn to play an instrument you have always wanted to master. Write poems for your favorite people or stories to read to your kids. Design and build

a set of shelves for your home. You are a creative being. Express

yourself, and learn more about yourself, through art.

Lifelong learning is the master key that unlocks every door you will encounter on your life journey. If you keep it firmly in your hand, you will discover a world of knowledge—and a place for yourself within it. 1.
