About the author

Rushdie was condemned to death in 1989 by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini, who issued a "fatwa"(伊斯兰教)法学家 的裁决- a religious decree - calling on Muslims to execute Rushdie for insulting Islam and the prophet Mohammed in his novel "The Satanic Verses."

About the author The death sentence made him an international celebrity, at the same time, it forced him out of the public eye. Rushdie went into hiding in England for much of the next decade, guarded by British policemen who were his constant companions, only gradually re-emerging into public life after the fatwa was lifted in 1998. Not many novelists are condemned to death for their writing. Fewer survive the experience. This alone makes Salman Rushdie unique, and uniquely famous among modern literary figures.

Although this book was generally praised in Europe and America, it was widely condemned in the Muslim world. In January of 1989 protests burst into full public consciousness. The book was burned before the television cameras in England and in Iran. Five members of a mob attacking the American culture Center in Islamabad in protest were shot to death, and in Kashmir, sixty were injured in another protest and one person was killed. Later in 1989 the Ayatollah 〈伊斯兰阿亚图拉〉Khomeni, leader of the Iranian revolution and the target of a freely satirical portrait in the novel, responded by issuing a denunciation (谴责, 告发)of Rushdie called a fatwa .(伊斯兰教)法学家的裁决in which he declared:
