IV - American regulations and standards
Today, both CSA and UL's testing and certification roles haveexpanded to cover both Canada and the USA. CSA is nowrecognized by the U.S. Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA) as a Nationally Recognized TestingLaboratory (NRTL). This means that they can now test and certifyproducts to U.S. as well as Canadian standards. There are threedifferent CSA marks:
For Canada only
For US only
For both US
and Canada
Honeywell products that carry the CSA NRTL/C or CULus mark are approved and recognized for usethroughout the US as well as Canada.

Control Reliability
Control reliability information can be found in documents published by the American National Stan-dards Institute (ANSI) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). ANSI is an insti-tute that provides industry guidance through their published machinery standards. OSHA is a USgovernment agency responsible for labor regulations. Additional information about ANSI andOSHA is described later in this section. These organizations have provided the following defini-tions for control reliability.
“Control Reliability” means that, “the device, system or interface shall be designed, constructedand installed such that a single component failure within the device, interface or system shall notprevent normal stopping action from taking place but shall prevent a successive machine cycle.”(ANSI B11.19-1990, 5.5)
In addition, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.217 states that, “the control system shall be constructed so that afailure within the system does not prevent the normal stopping action from being applied to thepress when required, but does prevent initiation of a successive stroke until the failure iscorrected. The failure shall be detectable by a simple test, or indicated by the control system.”The health and safety of American workers is aindustrial machinery. These standards areserious topic. protected from the hazards created by pointof operation, in-going nip points, and rotatingparts.
ANSI B11.19, paragraph 2.38 defines the pointof operation as, “The location in the machinetool where material is positioned and a processperformed.”
Protection from machinery applies to eithernew or existing machinery as stated in ANSIB11.19, in Part 1.3 Applications (Adopted inFeb. 28 1990).
“1.3.1 New Safeguarding. The requirements ofthis standard pertaining to the constructionof safeguarding shall be applied to all newsafeguarding, as referenced by the other B11machine tool safety standards, to be installedon machine tools in the United States within 12months after the approval date of thisstandard.”
“1.3.2 Existing Safeguarding. Within 48months of the approval date of this standard,all safeguarding, as referenced by the otherB11 machine tool safety standards, installed inthe United States on machine tools shall bemodified by the employer to the extentrequired to bring them into conformity withthe requirements of this standard.”
To protect operators working with industrialmachinery, the following safety devices shallbe used:
“2.15 Device, Safeguarding. A control attach-ment that:
(1)Restrains the operator from inadvertentlyreaching into the hazardous area, or
(2)Prevents normal or hazardous operation ifany part of an inpidual’s body isinadvertently within the hazardous area, or(3)Automatically withdraws the operator’shands, if the operator’s hands areinadvertently within the hazardous areaduring the hazardous portion of themachine cycle, or
(4)Maintains the operator or the operator’shands during the hazardous portion of themachine cycle at a safe distance from thehazardous area.” (ANSI B11.19)

Honeywell provides electromechanicalswitches and electronic sensors to protectoperators and other employees from industrialmachine hazards. When used in accordancewith our detailed instructions for use, theseproducts will fulfill one or more of the followingrequirements:
“2.30 Interlocked Barrier Guard. A fixed ormovable barrier attached and interlocked insuch a manner that the machine tool will notcycle or will not continue to cycle unless theguard itself or its hinged or movable sectionsenclose the hazardous area.” (ANSI B11.19)“2.39 Presence-sensing Device. A devicedesigned, constructed, and arranged to createa sensing field, area, or plane that will detectthe presence of the operator’s or other’s handor other body part and send a signal to stop orprevent hazardous motion of the machinetool.” (ANSI B11.19)
