I. Word Building

1. maximum n. & a. (being) the largest number, amount, etc. 最大 量,最大数,最大限度;顶点,极 限;最大的,最多的,最高的,顶 点的 opposite: minimum 最小量,最小数, 最低限度;最小的,最少的,最低 的

e.g. The maximum speed of this car is 120 miles per hour. I have read the advertisement but, since the maximum age for the job is 25, I cannot apply for it. In the United States, before 1996, drivers must not exceed a maximum of 55 miles an hour. Even if we reduce our expenses to the minimum, we still will not be able to buy a house in les than two years.

2. impressive a. making a deep impression on sb. 给人深刻印象的,感人的 e.g. In the past few years Chinese athletes have made impressive achievements in competitive sports. This is an impressive building combining both the Chinese and western architectural styles. Note: impress v. impression n. make a deep impression on sb.

3. dramatize vt. put into dramatic form; express or represent (sth.) in a dramatic or exaggerated way 使戏剧化;使惹人注目

drama n. -ize (-ise) : make (into); (cause) to become 使成为;使像;使变成 P 218 Ex. 12

4. –logy: the science or study of (用以构成名词)某门学问;… 学

II. Introductory Remarks fantastic a. e.g. Many dreams are fantastic. (very strange) You can have a fantastic view of the city from the mountaintop. (very good or wonderful) What a fantastic film! (wonderful)

Warm-up Ex.1. What images does the term technology conjure up to most people? To most people it conjures up the images of smoky steel mills or noisy machines.

Warm-up Ex.2. What is the classic symbol of technology? It’s the assembly line created by Henry Ford more than half a century ago.

Warm-up Ex.3. How does the author think of this symbol? The author thinks that this symbol has always been inadequate and misleading and is even more misleading today.

Warm-up Ex.4. Why does the author think that way? Because technology has always been more than factories and machines, and the assembly line is outdated today.

Warm-up Ex.5. Then what is technology, according to Toffler?

Toffler thinks that technology includes not only factories and machines but also techniques and ways of doing things.

Warm-up Ex.6. Toffler says that the old symbols of technology – steel mills, noisy machines and the assembly line – are out of date, and it is time for our symbols of technology to change. Can you suggest one or two new symbols for the technology of today? The computer, spaceships, manmade satellites, etc.

III. Language Points1. term n. a word or expression used in a particular field, job or profession 专门名词,术语e.g. technical terms scientific terms

medical terms legal terms “Acid”, “base” and “salt” are terms commonly used in chemistry.

2. conjure up: cause (sth.) to appear in the mind; cause (sth.) 使联想起e.g. The singing of birds outside the window conjured up memories of my childhood in the countryside. The name of Chaplin conjures up the image of a little tramp with a brush mustache.

3. inadequate a. not enough; insufficient; 不充足的;不适当的e.g. One of the problems facing the new mayor is the inadequate water supply of the city. Without any experience in teaching, I was inadequate for the job.

4. misleading a. causing wrong impressions or conclusions; causing mistakes 误导的,引入歧 途的,使人误解的 e.g. The policemen found that the false clue was misleading. My father never believes in advertisements. He thinks most of them are misleading.

5. apply vt. bring or put into use 应用,运用e.g. By getting their students involved in a variety of activities, the English teachers expect them to apply and improve their language skills. This is a good opportunity to apply what you have learned in class to practical work.

6. occur vi. take place, happen 发生,出现e.g. They were still hopeful that some kind of miracle would occur. If headaches only occur at night, lack of fresh air and oxygen is often the cause.
