People have all-kinds of excuses for not volunteering their time to charities. ‘‘I’m too busy.”“Gas is too expensive to drive anywhere. I don’t need to go.” “I’ll just send some money instead.”
You won’t hear any such things from Betty Lowe. As Great Britain’s oldest active volunteer, 100-year-old Lowe spends her days between volunteering at a charity WRS shop at a hospital in her native Salford , England, and helping out with Britain’s version of the Girl Guides——a group she’s been a member of for 89 years.
“I had great interest in the guide and I used to go camping and walking. I was a bit of an outdoor girl when I was younger,” Lowe said.
Lowe isn’t quite in shape for camping these days, but she still keeps busy with her volunteer activities. When she’s not volunteering with one of her favo urite groups, she’s helping out friends and family, and is known as a best birthday cake cook.
Lowe just turned 100 years old on Monday, and more than 100 friends and family members showed up at her birthday party to wish her well. It sounds like this charitable woman was happy to blow out the candles with a smile. “I think it’s very good to be 100,” she said. “l’ve enjoyed all my life.”

Do you have brown hair? Are you taller than other kids your age? These characteristics were decided before you were born. You got your traits from your parents. They passed their traits on to you through genes (基因).
Genes carry codes (代码) for blue eyes or brown eyes. Genes say how tall you will get and what color hair you will have. You got half of your genes from your mother. You got half of your genes from your father. So you have your own set of genes. Each person gets different genes for each body part. That is why you look like but not exactly like your brother or sister.
A dominant (显性的) gene shows up most of the time. Brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes. A recessive (降性的) gene shows up less often. Light hair comes from a recessive gene. Dark hair is more common. Look at the eye color and hair color of the people around you. You will see that this is true.

Genes help to make you who you are. But they don't tell the whole story. Your genes may help you to be fast and strong. But you still need to learn how to run or swim or skate well.

Perhaps you’ve seen the English letters “WC” in your city. They show public toilets. But do you know it is far from elegant (优雅的) English? In fact, foreigners from English-speaking countries rarely use the letters.
Workers in our city are changing “WC” signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
“WC, or water closet, is old-fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me,” says Charlie Shifflet, a young man from the US. The old sign will become “Gents/Men” and “Ladies/Women”.
“I see lots of poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs,” he says. “I know what they mean. But they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me ‘My hometown is Henan Province’, I know he should say, ‘My hometown is in Henan Province’. ‘Hometown’ is a smaller place in a province. The common mistakes he picked up include “Not Entry”, which should be “No Entry”, “Direction of Airport” should be changed to “To the Airport”. And it is “room rate”, not “room price”. And remember to “Keep off the grass”, rather than “Care of the green”.
56. What does the writer think of the use of “WC”?
A. He doesn’t think it means water closet.
B. He doesn’t think it old-fashioned English.
