A

Zack was an ordinary boy, just like any other boy. He studied in school, took part in sports, and had his own friends and problems, like everybody else.

One day, a friend recommended (推荐) him to play a computer game. Though Zack was more of an outdoor person and did not really like sitting inside too long, he decided to give it a try. To his great surprise, he loved it and finally understood the wonders of using the Internet.

Soon he started to spend more and more time playing computer games and no longer played basketball or any other sports. His parents were not so concerned firstly. They thought it was very common for boys of his age to develop such an interest in the Internet. But his studies were starting to get affected (受影响). Finally, the report cards came in and to his parents and friends surprise, Zack had failed in every subject.

His parents were called for a meeting about Zack s studies. After some questioning, it was clear that computer games were completely destroying Zack s mind. Both his parents were asked to have a serious talk with Zack.

Zack s parents gave him a long lecture (训斥) about the disadvantages of the Internet but their words entered through one ear and escaped through the other one. Zack continued to play computer games and chat online with others whenever the opportunity came to him. His English teacher was surprised to see that Zack had started to use “u, r, lolz, coz” etc. in his homework. She told his parents immediately about this.

His parents finally took serious action, selling his computer at once and taking him to a psychologist (心理病学家).

Middle school is called middle school because it s in the middle of your school years. Elementary school (小学) is behind you. High school still waits for you. Middle school often includes sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

For a kid, going to middle school is often a big change: first, it means moving to a new building; second, it may mean taking a different bus with different students; third, the friends you made in elementary school may go to different middle schools. Other things that probably will be different are the teachers and the homework. All that can make you feel a bit scared on the first day of middle school.

Your homework will likely get more challenging (有挑战性的). In middle school you ll probably be learning some new subjects like foreign languages. You may also learn different stuff like more advanced (高级的) courses in computer technology, music and art, health, and life skills, such as cooking, even though you ve learned some about them in elementary school. On top of that, middle school will probably offer you a variety of new teams, clubs, and activities.

Besides, you might wonder how to make new friends in middle school. Here s something: try joining a club or a sports team. It s a great way to get to know new kids. Being in these groups also can help you feel at ease (自由自在,舒适). By next year, you ll be that cool older kid who s helping out the new kid. If he gets lost on the way to the gym, please show him the way!

The man, George Ballas, who found an easier way for people to cut grass and weeds, died in Houston on June 25th. He was 85 years old.

George Ballas was born in Louisiana. He joined the army at 17. He served in the Second World War and the Korean War. Then he became a dance teacher in a dance school. In the 1950s, he built a dance studio of his own in Houston, and it was the biggest in the world at that time. But he sold the studio in 1964.

By the early seventies, he was on to the next big thing. An idea occurred to him when he washed his car. He watched the needle-like bristles (刷子毛) of the brushes as they went round and round against his car. Could a similar tool be used to cut grass instead of pushing a lawn mower (割草机)? To find out, he placed lengths of fishing line through holes in a tin can. He tied the can to the spinning (旋转) part of a grass machine. The result? A new thing for millions of people who cut grass for a living or just to keep their neighbors happy came out.

George Ballas became known as the “Weed King”. As he once told the Houston Chronicle, “A weed eater comes along once in a lifetime.” His invention now still works well in corners and along walls and fences. The noise may not be the nicest, but nor is a loud mower. Just as a weed expert Bill Curran at Penn State University points out, with the tool, people are freed from pulling weeds by hand. 8. Before teaching in a dance school, George

A. served in the army B. studied in a dan …… 此处隐藏:13781字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
