*In the event of a flood, or the flooding of a space in the event a fire is extinguished by a water system, a ship would need to utilise the bilge pumping arrangements to remove water as quickly and efficiently as is possible, regardless of whether it is contaminated oil or not, in order to avoid compounding the emergency by the detrimental effects of the water on stability and hull stresses.
