Whether Chinese students should study abroad or not

It is acknowledge that there are increasing numbers of Chinese Students choosing to study abroad for a variety of reasons, such as improving their oral English, enhancing their personal living ability or just experiencing another country’s life and culture, etc. Therefore, it is imperative for us to think it over, whether Chinese students should study abroad, as far as I am concerned, the answer is ‘Yes!’.

I am a person who has great desire to have a further study abroad for the purpose of having a better learning environment and better living conditions. But here I have to say a good understanding of two countries’ different cultures is the premise to study abroad.

There are five reasons accounting my preference to studying abroad. Firstly, with the development of economy and China’s entry into the WTO, English is widely used in the world, so it is necessary to learn English well so that we can speak English like a native. It is a truth that a Chinese student who have been learning English for tens of years but he or she still can not open their mouth to speak English in class or when meeting some foreigners. Why, it is because that they are afraid of making mistakes and they are not provided a proper and real English speaking environment. All the people they meet everyday are Chinese teachers or just few foreigners in Chinese colleges. Absolutely, they do not have a good chance to talk to foreigners to

practice their English. However, if a Chinese student were sent to abroad, the first thing he or she has to do is studying English; otherwise, a big problem of communication will be come out, which is a great difficulty in their life abroad.

Secondly, as we know, some foreign countries are developed countries with abundant economy backgrounds and comprehensive developing qualities, while China is just a developing country although it is committed to make progress. So it is a good idea to send Chinese students to abroad, experiencing the real power country, meantime, they will learn more about this country, including its culture, customs, lifestyle, inpidual values or patterns of thinking and so on. In today’s international world, having knowledge of other countries is laying a solid foundation to one’s eye-opening. You are a person who knows most about foreigners, so one day if you settle down there, you will be accustomed to such kind of foreign living style.

Thirdly, although studying abroad is not quite easy for a Chinese student who has grown up in a Chinese traditional family with old rules that children should be taken care of by their parents. When a Chinese student begins the life abroad, he or she has to learn how to live by oneself and how to look after themselves when being alone. This is a challenge for a student. In a foreign country, there are few truthful friends or relatives who can give you a hand when you are in trouble, so you have to do everything independently. In spite of the difficulties and tough, you can be trained as a strong person, so when something difficult happened in your life, you can deal with it well. You are not a Chinese bird staying in the cage for tens of years.

Fourthly, when it comes to the difficulties of life spent abroad, I have to say if

a Chinese student study abroad, he or she has to find a part-time job to pay for the rent, the utility bills or the personal eating expenses, provided that this Chinese study doesn’t live in a pretty rich family. Life in abroad is tough, a Chinese student will enhance their ability of making money by himself to support him.

Fifthly, I have some friends who have studied abroad for many years. They told me that the difference between Chinese education and foreign education. In China, the teacher is the main role of the whole lecture teaching and Chinese students are told what should do or not. But in foreign countries, the students are the main roles; the university stresses the interactive between teachers and students. Teachers prefer their students thinking independently, trying out innovative ideas and having a mutual discussion with them. Besides, Chinese students studying abroad will not carry more studying burden than those who study in domestic. They don’t need to do thousands of piles of homework, but they need to learn something from various perspectives.

In a word, in my opinion, studying abroad is a good opportunity for Chinese students if their family can afford to pay for the fees. Just imagine, after studying abroad, he or she will broaden the horizon and make an improvement of them. They learned to how to take care of themselves when being alone, how to make money to support them alone, how to adapt them to a new environment, learning their culture or life, how to make friends with foreigners and how to speak English like a native. These students can develop better with advanced abilities in foreign universities with modern teaching facilities and qualified teachers.
