Work in pairs. Look at the photo scrapbook of childhood memories. Talk about what kind of childhood memories they show. Do any photos remind you of anything from your childhood?

This shows a boy making bubbles using a stick attached with a loop of flexible wire (in a round shape or curve) and a bucket of soapy water. I used to do this with a small piece of circular wire and it was fun to see how many bubbles you could make and try to make the biggest bubble ever.

Here are two children feeding a sheep. I remember feeding dogs and chickens when I was about four, and there are photos of me playing with a cat at that age.

This is a more formal photo. It reminds me of the occasion when I joined the Young Pioneers at seven years old. The photographer kept trying to make me smile, but I was shy so I didn’t want to.

A child writing … yes, this is a familiar memory for me! Writing seemed to be so difficult then, and it was always a struggle to finish the page. Funnily enough, reading seemed to be easy, though.

The girl here seems to be about to wash the dog. This isn’t something I used to do. I simply don’t recall ever washing an animal, but we had dogs at home when I was small.

1 Who is Superman?

In comics, films, and the 1940 radio serials, Superman is a newspaper reporter who has special abilities to fly and is fantastically strong. When he becomes Superman he changes into a special blue suit with a red cape and fights crime. Nobody knows who Superman really is, but he always turns up at the right moment to solve problems.

2 Why do you think the writer talks about Superman? She might have been a huge Superman fan when she was young, and have a lot of good childhood memories associated with Superman.

3 What role might Superman play in her childhood? Superman might have been the writer’s hero and played an important role in her childhood.

Background information

Sylvia Plath (1932–1963) is widely considered one of the major American poets of the 20th century. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, graduated from Smith College and was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University. She married the English poet, Ted Hughes (1930–1998) in 1956. They lived in the US where she taught at Smith College before settling in England. Their five years together were creative and fruitful; the two poets influenced each other’s work. In her lifetime, she published The Colossus (1960), a book of poems, and The Bell Jar (1963), a novel. In 1962–1963 her marriage was over, she and her two children were ill. In February 1963, probably the coldest winter of the century, she killed herself with gas. She wrote as a busy housewife and mother; she said her poems were written at about 4 am “before the baby’s cry”. Later books of poems were Ariel (1965), Crossing the Water (1971), and Winter Trees (1972). Ted Hughes edited Sylvia Plath’s Collected Poems (1981), which posthumously won a Pulitzer Prize in 1982.

Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams is a collection of short stories, essays and extracts from diaries. It includes psychological fiction: A narrator working in a clinic writes down patients’ dreams which she memorizes from their hospital records, calling the collection her “Bible of dreams”. Sylvia Plath wrote, “What I fear most, I think, is the death of the imagination … we want to be moving, working, making dreams to run toward; the poverty of life without dreams is too horrible to imagine.”

Superman is an American fictional hero of comics, radio serials, TV programmes, films and video games. In the story, Superman comes from the planet Krypton and was sent to earth by his father. He was raised by a Kansas farmer as “Clark Kent”. He becomes a mild-mannered reporter but changes to the Superman blue suit with the famous “S” logo and red cape whenever humanity needs help, and especially to prevent crime and disasters. Superman can fly and has fantastic strength. Nobody knows who he really is, but he always turns up in moments of danger. Superman has iconic status and has set a trend for other superheroes with extreme abilities and skills, eg Batman, Spiderman, Wonderwoman etc.

The bay side of town is the east and south-east of the city of Boston, with the bay to the east. Johnson Avenue is south-east of the city centre, with Logan International Airport located on the east side of the city on the far side of the Charles River.

Mecca and Jerusalem are both considered holy cities. As places for pilgrimage they attract people from far and wide, so as metaphors they represent a significant goal or attractive destiny. Mecca is inland from the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia and the holiest city for Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad was born there and proclaimed Islam in the city.
