2.2.1 Plot Summery of the Movies

Batman is a superhero co-created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and published by DC Comics. His first appearance could date back to 1939, and he is the first superhero without superpower during the long comic history. Due to the popularity of Batman, a large number of movie adaptations are released. The most famous and well-known version is the study object in this thesis.

Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises consist of the remarkable and unforgettable series of Batman directed by Christopher Nolan, a talent and creative director. These three movies all achieved good box office success and attracted public s attention, especially the last two, both in the top twenty among worldwide movies that exceeded 1 billion dollars.

Batman Begins, as the starter of the trilogy, restarts a new totally independent series that narrate how Bruce Wayne, the hero of the movie, finally becomes Batman. This movie is bold enough to break the old pattern of heroic movies that focus on the brilliant special effects and the description of movement plays, but makes an attempt to limn the mental situation of the superhero.

The whole story goes like this: Small Bruce Wayne witnessed the mob s killing of

his affectionate parents. This catastrophic tragedy completely changed his future life. On the one side, he wished to inherit his parents selfless dedication spirit to society. While on the other hand, he aimed to revenge for his parents. Under this circumstance, this young billionaire lost faith to this corrupt society and left Gotham. In order to realize the criminal s mind, he committed crimes without scruples. After being arrested by policeman, he met an uncanny man named Duka, who led Bruce highly skilled in Wushu, which also gave him capability to diminish the evil forces.

And then Bruce Wayne came back to Gotham only to find that this city had

already swallowed by criminals and corrupt officials. And Wayne Enterprises had already become a mercenary cooperation under the control of current executive Earl. With the assistance of upright police Gordon, loyal butler Alfred and reliable ally

Fox, Bruce eventually turned into the Batman to fight against all the evil forces that tried to destroy Gotham.

The Dark Knight, the second film in the trilogy, was the first ever Batman feature

film without the word Batman in its title, which enhances the level of hero movies. The plot is also more complex than the first movie: this time, Batman

encountered with a stronger opponent, Joker. Batman, his friend Gordon and law office Dent made a trap to capture Joker. Joker was taken into custody and he said that Batman s childhood friend Rachel and law office Dent were poisoned in totally different places to force Batman to make a cruel choice that he only can save one person. Batman desired to save Rachel but only to rescue Dent, and his friend Gordon failed to save Rachel simultaneously. Dent was ruined by this incident and was misguided by Joker, and conversed his resentment into Batman and Gordon. Worse than this, Joker escaped from prison and utilized two bombs to control two ships; one was full of prisoners and the other filled with normal citizens. Joker menaced them that the only way to self salvation was to ignite the other ship. Otherwise, both of the ships would be exploded at midnight. Batman successfully hampered Joker to detonate those two ships, and then he discovered that Dent, once the token of justice, now was more perilous than Joker due to his insane behaviours. Although Dent kidnapped Gordon s son to revenge and shoot Batman, he still died after the fierce combat with Batman. Witnessed the corruption of Dent, Batman and Gordon both knew that if Dent s vicious behaviours were revealed to the public, it would let the whole society in more chaos and violence. To maintain Gordon s image and harmony of society, Batman was willing to be a scope gape of Dent. And in the end of the movie, Gordon crushed the Batman light and released the wanted poster, calling Batman as The Dark Knight .

The third movie of this series is The Dark Knight Rises, which is the fabulous

ending of this trilogy. This story set the background eight years later when Bruce was older than before and suffered from some diseases. He sacrificed himself to ensure the peace of society, but this white lie was finally uncovered by the horrible terrorist Bane. With the transmission of the lie, the peaceful coverage collapsed. And Bane planned a

mysterious and appalling attack that compelled Batman returned to battlefield to protect Gotham. The Batman trilogy is all in the dark and bleak atmosphere. However when

looking into the deep side of the movie, the humanity light will never be eliminated.

2.2.2 The Analysis of Heroism in Batman Series

Qi Jin s (齐谨) From Hollywood to see American Values of Individual Heroism

concludes the patterns of how to shape a powerful hero. “In this thesis, more attention for three points that hero needs courage, hero will get consummation by formidable enemy and tough hero image was mirrored by amiable woman” (22).

Without question, at first, all those wonderful heroes in movies need courage.

Their hesitation will impair their resolution to protect the world. And from other side, overcoming the scare afraid is also the way to show courage. In Batman Begins, due to the childhood experiences, Bruce was afraid of bats. Years later, Duke, the trainer of Bruce once said: “To manipulate the fears in others, you must first master your own.” Enlightened from the guidance, Bruce dressed on batman tabard to struggle against crime.

Secondly, in those heroic movies, to demonstrate the bravery of heroes, it is

crucial to create a mighty negative character. Batman series also have this kind of villain. Scarecrow, …… 此处隐藏:5983字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
