Increasing Your Word Power
1 In English some adjectives cannot be used as pre-nominal modifiers. Instead, they can only follow link verbs and function as the predicative, e.g. alone, afraid, asleep, awake, alive, alike, unable, ill, glad, sorry, fond. Hence, we can say a frightened girl or a sick boy, but it is wrong to say *an afraid girl or *an ill boy.
