unmounted and untrimmed. Prepare drawings and graphs with black India ink on white background, using no typewriting or computer print. Letters, numbers and symbols should be clear and even throughout and large enough to be legible when reduced for publication. Do not attempt to hand-letter line drawings and photographs.

If submitting by post, all figures must be submitted in triplicate and have a label pasted on the back indicating the figure number, the top of the figure, and the first author's name. Do not write directly on the back of the photographs or damage them by using paper clips. If photographs of persons are used, either the subjects must not be identifiable or written permission to use the photographs must accompany the manuscript.

The Editor will not return manuscripts. If the author(s) wishes to have the figure(s) from a rejected article returned, a self-addressed, stamped envelope must be provided.

Colour figures. The Journal encourages the publication of colour figures. The first colour figure will be produced free of charge, and additional colour figures may be free to authors where the Editor and the Publisher are of the view that it is essential. In all other instances, authors will be asked to return a signed copy of the completed Colourwork Agreement Form to the Editorial Office before their manuscript is passed to the Publisher Colourwork Form The Journal is pleased to allow authors to publish figures in colour free of charge in the online edition.

REVISED MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

An electronic version of the revised manuscript must be provided. Accepted manuscripts will be published from the Word file (not PDF) wherever practicable and therefore revised versions must be provided in this form. This reduces typesetting errors and speeds up publication. Authors must ensure that all sections of their paper, excluding figures, are presented in a single file, and that all files and figure and table ordering are updated to incorporate all revisions. Two versions of the main manuscript file should be supplied, one with the revisions marked using "Track Changes", and one with all changes accepted.

All accepted manuscripts must be accompanied by a signed Exclusive Licence Form or Online Open Form. Authors wishing to publish colour figures in print must also submit a Colourwork Agreement Form.

Text

Files should be formatted double-spaced with no hyphenation and automatic word-wrap (no hard returns within paragraphs). Please type your text consistently, e.g. take care to distinguish between '1' (one) and 'l' (lower-case L) and '0' (zero) and 'O' (capital O), etc.

Tables

Tables should be created using the table editor function of word processing software. Do not use graphics software to create tables.

Mathematics

In-line equations should be typed as text were possible. Graphics programs and 'equation editors' can also be used, and the output will be used were possible but displayed equations may

Figures

On acceptance of a paper, please send us digital versions of your figures if at all possible. EPS and TIFF files are preferable for print reproduction. Please note that your paper will go through production more quickly if the figures do not have to be relabelled or redrawn.

Please ensure that electronic artwork is prepared such that, after reduction to fit across one or two columns or two-thirds width (80mm, 169mm or 110mm respectively) as required, all lettering will be clear and easy to read, i.e. no labels should be too large or too small. Avoid using tints if possible; if they are essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make them coarse. Always enclose hard copies of digitally supplied figures. No artwork for publication should be incorporated into the final accepted text files. Original drawings or photographs should be supplied for reproduction.

PROOFS

The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site:

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
