Thestudyinvolves20peoplewhostartedcombinationsofanti-HIVdrugsveryearlyinthecourseofthedisease,within90daysoftheirinfections.They’vebeentreatedforupto18months.Fourothershavedroppedoutbecauseofsideeffectsorproblemscomplyingwiththeexactingdrugsystem.

ThedrugshaveknockedtheAIDSvirusdowntoundetectablelevelsinthebloodofall

remainingpatients.And,inthelatestdevelopment,scientistshavenowtestedlymphnodesandsemenfromafewpatientsandfoundnovirusreproducingthere,Hosays.“Bearinmindthatundetectabledoesnotequalabsent,”Hosays.

Hohascalculatedthatthedrugsshouldbeabletowipeoutremainingviruses–atleastfromknownreservoirsthroughoutthebody–intwotothreeyears.Buttheonlywaytoprove

eradicationwouldbetostopthedrugsandseeiftheviruscomesback.OnWednesday,Hosaidhewouldn’taskanypatienttoconsiderthatstepbefore2(1/2)yearsoftreatment.
