accept it. On the one hand, Darcy did not consider his pride wrong even it might hurt the feelings of others. To him, he was being just and unfeigned: “Disguise of every sort is my abhorrence.” (Austen 127) On the other hand, realizing his pride was disdained by whom he loved and had caused much misunderstanding, he was not object to change.

With regard to Wickham, Darcy has known his ill moral character all along.

However, for whatever reason, he said nothing when the neighborhood including Elizabeth was taken in by him. Were it not for Elizabeth’s severest reproofs, he still would have revealed nothing. Hauteur and superciliousness has nearly ruined his chance of happiness. The failure of his first proposal enabled Darcy to see his own faults of pride and social prejudice. He was changed. It can be seen in his later warm, civil reception of the Gardiners, and all the trouble and mortifications he bore in the quest of Lydia, success in which gave rise to dealing with and persuading a man he most despised just so Elizabeth’s family reputation could be saved.

Despite the fact that pride and prejudice had stood in the way and eventually

made way for Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship, their marriage would not have been

possible without certain common nature and equality on the level of thoughts. Both Elizabeth and Darcy care deeply about their family and friends. When heard that Jane was sick, Elizabeth was the only one in the family that was so worried and had to know if Jane was safe and sound with her own eyes. She did not mind walking three miles by herself in the mud and arriving in dirty stockings and sweat. Only for true care and love could someone have done that. Darcy, too, has been kind to his housekeeper, his sister Georgiana and Bingley. Furthermore, they both have a unique and astute view of the world and people in it. The bouts of wit at Netherfield between Elizabeth and Darcy are keen and witty, leaving other people in the same room, Miss Bingley to be exact, unable to gain a share.

Elizabeth and Darcy started off with pride and prejudice and they worked their way through overcoming these faults. Elizabeth’s love for Darcy followed her

abandoning the original oversimplified prejudice against Darcy; and Darcy, having

abandoned his prior pride, treated his love for Elizabeth, which has never changed, with nothing but genuineness and sincerity. If this is some sort of surrender, it is Darcy’s surrender to love and to the future felicity in life. Their relationship finally evolved into a mature and suitable marriage, where both are respectful and appreciative of each other.
