1Scope and field of application

This standard specifies general tolerances for non-enamelled metal columns predominantly used in processengineering applications. The general tolerances specified here only apply where reference is made to this standard ontechnical drawings or other relevant documents (e.g. technical delivery conditions) in the form described in clause 2.Drawings are considered incomplete when they do not include a reference to a general tolerances standard, evenwhere the dimensions are not toleranced (this requirement does not apply to drawings indicating auxiliary dimensionsonly).

The general tolerances can be maintained using customary workshop equipment and practices.

Tolerances with a magnitude different from those specified here may also be selected subject to agreement.Pressure vessels are also required to comply with the Druckbehälterverordnung (Pressure Vessel Regulation).2Designation and indications on drawings

Drawings and orders for non-enameled columns (S) with design "fine" (f) of internal support rings to datum line anddesign "coarse" (g) of internal support rings to horizontal line, for which the general tolerances specified in this standardapply shall include the following designation:

3General tolerances for columns

Columns are not expected to conform to the designs illustrated here; compliance is only required for the generaltolerances as specified or agreed upon.

The dimensions specified in this standard refer to generating and datum lines, angular deviations to the center line inelevation and plan. Dimensions of nozzles are specified with reference to the raised faces.The datum line (see DIN 28011 and DIN 28013) shall be clearly marked or punched on the column. It shall beindicated on all drawings and be visible on the finished column.

For standardized semi-finished products, e.g. pipes, flanges, lifting elements, the permissible deviations specified in therelevant standards shall apply.

For the dimensions not individually toleranced in this standard, accuracy grade D as specified in DIN 8570 shall applyas the general tolerance.

Explanatory notesFlatness

During the discussions on this standard the question concerning the necessary flatness of flange sealing faces wasthoroughly examined with the result that despite the great number of influencing variables (temperature, pressure andviscosity of the media to be sealed, flange stability, bolt loads, gasket properties etc.) it is necessary to establish asimple method for the determination of the flatness as well as for the specification of the limit deviations. The workinggroup dealing with this standard therefore proposes to measure the flange faces in circumferential direction using afeeler gauge. The deviation from flatness, defined as the difference in height normal to the flange face, shall at no pointexceed a value of 0,1 % of the shorter distance between two measuring points as measured in circumferential direction(the longer distance shall complement the shorter one to the full circumference). According to this conception, largerlong-wave differences are permissible. Short wave deviations, however, shall remain small. It remains to be seen

whether or not practical use of this method will be successful.
