Reuters PowerPlus Pro Workshop 2009

PowerPlus Pro (PPP) is a cross-market tool for Reuters information in Microsoft Excel. It is an Excel Add-Ins which allows you to extract data from Reuters.

1. Standalone Stations

a. Financial Trading Lab (Rm 4117, lift 19)

b. Library Database Room (G/F, behind the Reference Counter)

To start: Windows Start > All Programs > Reuters 3000 Xtra > PowerPlus Pro

2. Hosted Terminals (Web-version)

a. Library Homepage () > Database > R (Alphabetical List) b. First-time users are required to install Citrix.

(Note: Reuters 3000Xtra (web version) is currently not compatible on MAC) c. On Kobra toolbar, select Tools > PowerPlus Pro

Open Reuters 3000Xtra & PowerPlus Pro

Windows Start > Reuters 3000Xtra > (i) Reuters 3000Xtra and (ii) PowerPlus Pro On PowerPlus Pro, select Reuters > Assistants

A – Real Time Data

B – Reference Data

- Security - Treasury

C – Time Series Data

You can find real-time data for FX and some stock indexes but not equities (stock, warrants, etc). There are to extract real-time data on PPP:

A) Drag-n-Drop – Move data directly from Reuters 3000Xtra (Kobra) to PowerPlus Pro (PPP). B) Real Time Quote Assistant – A step-by-step approach to extract data from PPP.

(A)Drag-n-Drop & Speed List

1. On Reuters 3000Xtra, press F4 to

open a Quote object 2. Type EUR=

(Note: We have real time data for FX but not stock)

3. On PPP, type EUR=, BID, ASK,

Display Name in cell C2, D2 and E2 respectively.

4. Note: Bid, Ask and Display Name

are the fields available for EUR=. See Display All Fields.

5. Drag the data from Quote to PPP. 6. Check the “Always trust macros

from this source” if you receive a Security Warning message. 7. Click Enable Marcos

8. Add GBP= and AUD= to cell B4 &

B5.

9. Right mouse-click and select

Real-Time Speed List.

[Note: Real-Time Speed Snap – just one single snapshot of the data]

1. On PPP, select Reuters > Assistants > Real Time Quotes 2. Add EUR=, GBP= & AUD= to the Selected Subject box.

Click Next.

3. Select All Fields folder > add Bid, Ask and Display Name

to the Selected Fields box. Click Next.

4. Select Streaming (RtGet) as the Update Mode (Streaming, Frequency or Snap). Click Next > Finish.

Download the Value, Volume and Turnover1. RIC lookup - What are the Reuters Instrument Codes (RICs) for above indexes? Use Reuters Search on Kobra

for help.

2. Download the data by either approach (A or B) 3. Note: beware of Field Names

Retrieve the real-time series for EUR=

1. Open a new worksheet.

2. Reuters > Assistant > Real-Time Series. 3. Type EUR= in the Code box > click Add > Next 4. Select All Fields folder > add Bid, Ask and Display

5. Check the Start Date & End Date box > set the

time as follows …….

6. Change 1 Minute(s) to 1 Second(s) in the Update

every box. 7. Click Next > Finish.

8. Press F4 on Kobra, type EUR= > Enter

Provides reference data at a particular date for multiple tickers

Retrieve Total Assets and Total Liabilities for 0001.HK, 0002.HK and 0003.HK

1. Open a new worksheet.

2. Reuters > Assistant > Security Instruments. 3. Add 0001.HK, 0002.HK and 0003.HK, click Next. 4. Select All Fields tab.

5. Add the following fields to the Selected Fields box:

i. Total Assets, ii. Total Liabilities 6. Click Next.

7. Specify Period Type and Date if necessary (e.g. Financial Year 5 years ago) 8. Click Next > Finish.

Gives you a series of reference data for a single RIC

Retrieve the final and interim pidend history (Announcement Date, Dividend Ex Date, Pay Date and Adjusted Net Dividend) for 0001.HK

1. Open a new worksheet.

2. Reuters > Assistant > Security History. 3. Add 0001.HK. Click Next.

Expand the Equity folder > Dividend History folder,

add Announcement Date, Dividend Ex Date, Pay Date and Adjusted Net Dividend.

5. Select field properties (e.g. change the Announcement Date from 5 years ago to 10 years ago. 6. Click Next.

7. Change the table format if necessary, click Finish.

Extract the EPS Announcement Date and Adjusted EPS for all EPS & Period Type of 0005.HK (HSBC) Covers reference data (e.g. Company Events, M&A information, Ownership, Index Weighting, etc)

Retrieve the current Constituents and their weightings in % for an Equity Index (e.g. Hang Seng Index - .HSI)

1. Open a new worksheet.

2. Reuters > Assistant > Security List. 3. Type .HSI in the Code box > click > 4. Click Next

5. Open Index folder and select Index

Constituents Weighting.

6. Select and add RIC, Short Name of

Organization and Weighting Percentage to Selected Fields box. 7. Click Next.

8. Make any change on the Security List Format

Table if necessary (e.g. No. of Rows). 9. Click Finish.

How to get monthly closing prices for all HSI constituents from 01/01/2005 to 12/31/2007?

1. On PPP, open a new worksheet. 2. Select Reuters > Find Reuters Data

(you will open the Reuters Search). 3. Select Indices tab > type Hang Seng

in the Name box. 4. On the Results list, click on

Constituents.
