What are the most popular pets in the world? Cats and dogs!

In the US, there are more than 160 million dogs and cats. This is about half of the country’s population. About 60% of American families celebrate their pets’ birthdays.

Cats and dogs are also good topics for small talks --- “What a lovely dog! What’s his name?” People easily become friends because of pets.

People think dogs are loyal animals. They help do lots of jobs like hunting and guarding. They even went into space earlier than people. In 1957, Russia put a dog called Laika into space.

Cats catch mice. They are not as loyal as dogs but are cheerful. Cats once had a hard life. Around the year 1400, people in Europe thought cats had something to do with witches (女巫). Hundreds of thousands of cats were killed. This didn’t stop until the 17th century.

Today, cats and dogs are both people’s good friends. They are in the most popular cartoons. The most famous ones are Garfield and Snoopy. Garfield is a lazy fat cat. He is often mad with his master. Snoopy is a thoughtful small dog. He likes to write stories.

B I live in Barcelona, Spain. It’s a big city, and there are many cars, but my seeing-eye dog Terra goes to work with me every morning and doesn’t let me walk in the street and get hit by a car.

I have a baby boy. A good thing is that my dog watches out for him. I can put the baby in his stroller (童车), and Terra makes sure we are both okay. I have had Terra for ten years. She is kind. So when I take more care of the baby, she never gets unhappy.

Terra likes to play, too. When we are ready to go out, I hold the harness high over my head, and she jumps up into it. But when the harness (挽具) is on, she stops playing. She knows she has a job to do.

In the past, people in Spain had to get their seeing-eye dogs from the United States. It was not easy because there weren’t enough dogs. People had to wait several years. Now there is a school in Madrid that trains seeing-eye dogs, so it is easier and faster to get dogs. Having a dog is work. You have to feed it and bathe it, but I am happy to do this because Terra is a very special friend and helper.
