Reading selectively or extensively

In our ancient history, the majority of people preferred to reading selectively. The poets major in nothing except poem. However, nowadays, while an increasing number of people are keen on extensive reading. They scan all kinds of books without caring for them are good or not. So, should such a trend continue, it would definitely lead to different viewpoints from various people.

Some people believe that only read books selectively can we understand the essence of book which as a result we could grasp the real knowledge in books, while others dismiss it as

misleading. They hold the view that extensive reading is essential in boosting our knowledgeable level. We can ponder problems with perse visions which we take in from extensive reading. As a consequence, there are more latitude for us to deal with the matter. As far as I am concerned, there is no doubt that reading extensively could open our mind while it is by no means we should read all books we meet. It is sensible for us to combine two ways with together. On the one hand, living in a fast pace of live, we must equip ourselves with different knowledge through the extensive reading so that we can get over different troubles. On the other hand, we should read some books which are classics in their fields. It not only assure we can gain the real knowledge but also avoid wasting time and energy.

In a word, there is not a single criterion to say which are good or bad. As long as combine them together, we can be both professional and capable.
