between the relationship of Catherine and Heathcliff. The richman’s son Edgar

Linton who lives next to Catherine requests her love, and she answers his love. So

Heathcliff lefts the family angrily. After Catherine's death, Heathcliff leads himself to

become crueler and commits more acts of revenge towards the people. It is revenge

that leads him to get back on all who cause his sorrow in his heart.

Edmond Dantes, a young sailor with a promising future, is arrested on his

wedding day and imprisoned on the island fortress of the Chateau d'If with no hope

for release. Dantes’s future is thus promising. His father’s financial situation as well

as his own will be greatly ameliorated. In addition, Dantes has plans to marry

Mercedes who has awaited his return from sea with great anxiety and love. But

everything is destroyed by enemies. Danglars and Ferdinand write a letter accusing

Edmond of carrying a letter from Elba to the Bonapartist committee in Paris. On his

wedding day, Edmond is arrested and is secretly imprisoned in the deepest dungeons

of the Chateau D'If.

Edmond is the victim of the envy of Danglars, the lust of Fernand, and the

political ambition of Villefort. The selfishness of these three men separate Dantes

from all that are precious to him. He spends fourteen grueling years during his

imprisonment. There Edmond’s incarceration is secured by the plotting of his enemies

outside the prison, particularly Villefort, who wishes to cover up his own father's

connections with the Bonapartists.

B. The Differences of the Revenge’s Methods

The aim of Heathcliff’s revenge is to destroy people. Throughout the rest of the

novel it shows the acts of revenge that Heathcliff takes revenge to all the people who

abuse him when he was young. The methods of revenge are immoral, cruel and

inhuman.

Heathcliff gets his revenge by taking over everything and everyone. He returns to

get revenge on Hindley for his mistreatment to him. He ruins Hindley by encouraging

his excessive drinking and gambling. When Hindley dies, Heathcliff gets Wuthering

Heights. His revenge is also directed towards Edgar Linton, whom he sees as having

stolen Catherine from him. He devises a series of schemes to take control of the

ownership of the Thrushcross Grange from the Linton family and secure it for himself.

He then marries Isabella to make mistreat on her。 Although he marries Isabella, he

never loves her. He simply wants to get back at Catherine and Edgar Linton who is

Isabella's brother. What’s more, his attitude towards Isabella is not only very cruel but

also very imperious. Then he takes Hindley's property and that of his son Hareton in

order to humiliate him for all the years he has suffered, and of course for taking the

woman he loves.

Later in the play, Heathcliff forces the daughter of Catherine and Edgar who is

also named Catherine marry his son Linton. He makes use of both children to gain the

property of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange to finally get his revenge over

everyone. The revenge of Heathcliff is so absolute that he outlives everyone of the

first generation and owns their estates and children by the end of the book.

Edmond’s revenge comes true by creating different and new identities. After a

dramatic escape, he discovers a marvelous treasure revealed by the Abbe Faria, an

inmate in the dungeons. He possesses great riches, important friends, and immense

knowledge. Disguised as the Count of Monte Cristo and the Abbe Busoni, he carefully

makes acquaintances with the families of his enemies and the enemies themselves.

Dantes formulates a plan to destroy the lives of those who ruined his life.

Ferdinand has married Mercedes and is now the Count de Morcef. The Count of

Monte Cristo destroys Morcerf by revealing his military treachery to all of Parisien

society. Monte Cristo releases information to the press that proves that Morcef is a

traitor. Monte Cristo has bought Haydee as a slave. She testifies that the Count de

Morcef sells her into slavery. Her father has been the Count de Morcerf's benefactor.

Morcerf has skilled her father, and sells her mother and her into slavery. When this

news is revealed to Paris, the Count de Morcerf is thus ruined. His wife and son flee,

and he shoots himself.

The Count of Monte Cristo destroys Danglars by opening credit of six million

francs for him. Rightly when Danglars needs this money, the Count takes a receipt for

five million francs from him to cash. Danglars tries to redeem his five million francs

from Monte Cristo's firm in Italy. When he does this, Monte Cristo's bandits follow

him, and they destroy him by holding him captive and requiring him to pay vast sums

of money to survive on a little food. Danglars is left with nothing and his hair turns

white during his brief captivity with the Monte Cristo's bandits.

The Count of Monte Cristo destroys Villefort by introducing Calvacanti into

society. Long ago, Villefort has attempted to bury the newborn baby alive, but

Calvacanti, now Monte Cristo's servant has dug the baby up and saved it. Villefort's

crime is revealed in court, since Calvacanti is on trial as an escaped convict. Villefort

is thus destroyed. In the end, Villefort goes insane.

C. The Differences of the Revenge’s Results

When Heathcliff finally gets his revenge, he is not happy. Through the process of
