A legendary person is a person who is very famous and who is talked about by a lot of people. Often, legendary people are real people who lived a long time ago, so the information you find about them might be true but some of it might be untrue and just part of a legend. Legends often include things that are impossible or do not exit. In order to find out which information is real and which is not, you can listen out for the following expressions which people often use when discussing something which might not be real:

St Nicholas

Over 1,600 years ago, a man named Nicholas became the bishop of a village called Myra in Turkey. He was made into a saint, and later became one of the most popular figures in Christianity. He is now the saint of children, elders and many others, including butchers, merchants, choir singers and makers of perfume. He has more churches named after him than any other saint and has become one of the best-known figures in the world. Nicholas of Myra was very kind, merciful and generous, especially to young people. This is the man Father Christmas is based on.

One day, when St Nicholas was walking past a cottage, he overheard a man telling his three daughters that the family was so poor that there was not enough money for each girl to find a husband. Later, in the darkness of night, Nicholas went back to the house and threw a small bag of gold down the chimney. He did the same thing the following two nights, providing enough gold for all the three girls to get married. This is why some people say Father Christmas comes down the chimney. It is also said that one of the bags of gold fell into a stocking that was hanging up to dry over the fireplace. This is one of the explanations for why people hang stockings in front of the fireplace for Father Christmas to put presents in.

There are numerous stories about how St Nicholas gave aid to others. Many of these involve St Nicholas saving children from great danger. To honour him, many Europeans give gifts to their children on St Nicholas Day, which is celebrated on 6 December every year.

The traditional picture of St Nicholas is very different from that of Father Christmas today. He is usually shown as a tall, clear-shaven man without the beard and moustache that Father

Christmas is pictured with. St Nicholas is also presented as being much thinner than Father Christmas and wearing the neat, traditional clothes of a religious leader, not a red suit like Father Christmas’s. (348 W)
