这一发现17日发表在美国杂志《物理学评论》最新一期上。科学家说，虽然他们制造出的118号元素原子存在时间只有0.9毫秒，但它们的存在仍相当可信，错误的可能性只有万分之一。研究人员说，他们的这一发现不能立即投人实际应用。但它可以让研究人员更加接近理论物理学家提出的“稳定岛”假说。

科学家发现，原子序数超过110之后，随着原子序数的增加，原子的寿命会急剧下降。但研究人员认为114号元素附近存在一个稳定区域，这一区域的超重原子核能够长时间存在。这就是科学家上世纪60年代提出的“稳定岛”假说。

利弗莫尔·杜布纳小姐曾成功制造114号元素，其存在时间达到30秒。

如果超重元素稳定存在能够维持数分钟或者数小时，科学家就可以开始研究这些元素的化学性质，甚至可能发现某些特殊化学特性。
