Master of Science in Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing

Applications are invited for admission in September 2010 to a programme leading to the part-time or full-time degree of Master

of Science in Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing.

Duration of Study

The curriculum in part-time mode shall normally take two academic years of study; maximum period of study is three years.

The curriculum in full-time mode shall take one academic year of study; maximum period of study is two years.

Mode of Enrolment

You must complete 12 modules to graduate. You can do that by studying 8 modules plus a project (equivalent to 4 modules) or

12 modules.

The programme tries to provide an integration of technology with businesses, and consists of modules falling into two major

and related disciplines: electronic commerce modules and Internet computing modules. Students are encouraged to take

modules in both disciplines, provided they have the necessary pre-requisite knowledge for the particular module.

Modules are further pided into core and elective. Students are required to select at least 4 modules from the list of core

modules (can be any mixture of electronic commerce or Internet computing discipline). The remaining modules can be

selected from either core or elective modules.

To allow even more choices, students can apply for permission to take a maximum of 2 modules in related fields from any

master-level programmes in computer science or engineering to meet your professional needs.

Programme Fees

The composition fee subject to University’s approval for each module is HK$10,800. The project, which counts as four

modules, has a composition fee of HK$43,200. The total composition fees for the two study modes are therefore as follows:

12 modules: HK$10,800 X 12 = HK$129,600

8 modules + project: (HK$10,800 X 8) + (HK$10,800 X 4) = HK$129,600

Some of the modules have been approved by the HKSAR government as reimbursable courses under the Continuing

Students who did not obtain the China Postgraduate Scholarships for Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing are

required to pay the fees for enrolled modules on a semester basis. The first instalment of composition fees of one module is

payable at the time of acceptance of an offer of admission.

The China Postgraduate Scholarships for Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing

The scholarships are to be awarded to those PRC candidates who have successfully applied and been offered a place in the

Master of Science in Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing Programme as full-time students in Hong Kong. The

scholarships shall be used to meet part of the composition fees for a full-time programme of studies leading to the degree.

Successful applicants will need to pay the balance of the total composition fees minus the amount of scholarships awarded

when they accept the offer.

Eligibility

To be admitted to the Master of Science in Electronic Commerce and Internet Computing Programme, you must

1. comply with the General Regulations; and

2. hold a Bachelor degree in business, computer science, engineering, information systems (or in other fields which the

Admission Committee consider having the necessary background needed for this degree programme) or an equivalent

qualification from an institution recognized by this University.

English Language Requirement

Applicants who wish to be admitted on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong

where the language of teaching and /or examination is not English is required to obtain:

i. (TOEFL). An applicant who took the TOEFL should request the Education Testing Service (ETS) to send an official score

report to the University directly. For this purpose, the HKU TOEFL code number is 9671. Test scores more than two years

old will not be accepted.

ii. A minimum overall band of 6 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or

iii. Grade C or above in the Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE); or

iv. Grade C or above in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); or

v. Grade C or above in the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language;

unless in exceptional circumstances they are exempted from this requirement.

Transcripts

An official transcript should be requested from every college or university you have attended, except those undertaken in The

University of Hong Kong. Photocopies of the transcript request form may be used to request transcripts from additional institutions.

The official transcript with the transcript request form should be sent directly by the registrar of the institutions to the MSc
