Historical BackgroundThe political and social factors that gave rise to the Romantic Movement were the three revolutions. Under the influence of the American and French revolutions, national liberation movements(民族解放运动) and democratic movements (民主解放运动)swept across many European countries. England was no exception. No less important were the consequences of the industrial revolution. It brought great wealth to the rich and worsened working and living conditions of the poor. Hence there broke out a machine breaking movement, called the Luddite movement, and destroyed some stocking frames(织袜机) in 1979. Workers organized themselves and gave voice to(发泄) their distress by breaking machines, the riots lasted from 1811 to1818. The government took repressive measures against it.

Intellectual BackgroundThe shift in literature from emphasis on reason to instinct and emotion (从强调 理智到本能和情感的文学转变) was intellectually prepared for by a number of thinkers in the later half of the 18th century.

Characteristic Features of the Romantic Movement Subjectivism(主观性):romanticism is related to subjectivism, the interest of the romantic poets is not in the objective world or in the action of men ,but in the feelings, thoughts ,and experiences of the poets themselves. Spontaneity(自发性):words worth defines poetry as “the spontaneous overflow of feelings”(强烈感情的自然流露).the role of instinct(本能), intuition (直觉), and the feelings of “the heart” is stressed. Worship of nature(对自然的崇拜): romantic poets are worshippers of nature, especially the sublime aspect of a natural scene(壮观的自然景象) Simplicity(亲民性):romantic poets take to using everyday language spoken by the rustic people(底层民众). There was a growth of democratic feelings, and an increasing belief that every human being is worth being praised. The Romantic Movement is characterized by a humanitarian idealism(人道主义理 想论). There is a dominating note of melancholy (忧郁的主导思想)in the poems of the romantic poets. The theme of exile, isolation, and a longing for the infinite, for an indefinable and inaccessible goal is commonly found in their works. It was an age of poetry by which the poets outpoured their feeling and emotions. Romantic poets loved to use freer verse form, not the standard form of “heroic couplets”

Lifetime·Byron was born of noble blood both on the paternal and maternal lines(父 系和母系). He inherited the title of baron (男爵

)when he was ten years old. He was sent to study at Harrow(哈罗公学) and later at Cambridge(剑桥大 学).in 1807 while a student at Cambridge, he showed talent in verse writing by publishing a collection of lyrical verse(抒情诗) Hours of Idleness《闲散时 光》. He was provoked to write in reply his first important poem English Bards and Scotch Reviewers《英格兰诗人和苏格兰评论家》. He attainted his M.A. degree, from 1809 to 1811; he made a grand tour of the Continent. After his return, he took his seat in the House of Lords(英国上议院) and made a famous speech opposing the government’s cruel measures against the luddite. In 1815 he married an heiress but was soon separated from her. In 1824 he equipped a troop of soldiers with his own money to support the Greeks in their struggle against the turkeys. He died of fever in 1824 in Greece.

Influence Byron's poetry has great influence on the literature of the whole world. Across Europe, patriots and painters and musicians are all inspired by him. Poets and novelists are profoundly influenced by his work. Actually Byron has enriched European poetry with an abundance of ideas, images, artistic forms and innovations. As a leading Romanticist, Byron's chief contribution is his creation of the "Byronic hero".
