2008.1 What electives to choose?

In recent years colleges and universities across the nation have offered various courses for students to choose from. The optional courses cover almost every discipline from literature to philosophy, from computer science to public relations management and have been well received by students.

The reasons for students’ choice of different courses are varied. Some may minor in a certain subject in order to obtain an extra certificate, which they think will accord them a competitive edge in the intense job market after graduation. Others may have made their choices for the sake of knowledge, for they are convinced that knowledge is power and that they should acquire as much knowledge as possible in the institutions of higher learning.

In my opinion, college life should be colorful and meaningful and elective courses just serve the purpose. As a telecommunications major, I have registered for two courses, one of which is classical Chinese literature, and the other readings of Mao Zedong’s works. I am sure that the former will

promote my appreciation of the legacy of Chinese culture while the latter will deepen my understanding of contemporary Chinese society.

2007.6 Welcome to our club

Welcome to join our club. The primary aim of the erudition reading club is to enrich the extracurricular life, cultivate our love for learning, and promote campus culture. We all organize a series of lectures and seminars every weekend to exchange ideas and feelings of reading of some great books or bestsellers. Every month we will invite a famous writer to talk about his latest work or share his critique of some classics. And the guest speaker for this month is Yi Zhongtian, who is expected to offer his remarkable comment on the Three Kingdoms.

There are a lot of benefits if you join the club. First of all, you can make a lot of new friends who will share with you what they are reading. Secondly, you can buy books at much lower prices. Specifically, the membership of the club entitles you to a 40

2007.1 Spring Festival Gala On CCTV

CCTV Gala of Spring Festival is a TV program live broadcast on the eve of each Spring Festival. Over the past decades many people have enjoyed the colorful and funny programs in the gala, and today some families still have a family tradition of celebrating Spring Festival by watching the gala till late into the night.

Some others, especially some youngsters, however, could not understand why there are so many

people who are enthusiastic for the programs in the gala. They wonder if these people can still catch up with the fast changing world. They would argue that the programs in the gala are boring and obsolete; these programs, which may last several hours, are unbearable. Therefore, they call on the cancellation of the Gala on CCTV.

In my opinion, the gala, due to its popularity, shall not be cancelled in such haste. The gala does not necessarily go against the fashion and novelty of the modern world. There are various programs on the gala that may appeal to different audiences. Above all, the gala provides a good chance for family members to gather together to celebrate the coming of New Year in a traditional way. If we could be together with the persons we love and savor or togetherness, why cancel the gala on CCTV?

2006.6 On students choosing lectures

At present, some colleges and universities have allowed their students to choose their own teachers

for certain course. In fact, this innovative practice is even encouraged among students.

When it comes to the choice of teachers, some factors should be taken into consideration. On the one hand, a learned teacher is preferred. After all, for a student, studying is given full priority. A teacher with plentiful knowledge can ease the burden of study for many students and provide them with many opportunities to enlarge their scope of knowledge and realize their potentials as well. On the other hand, a teacher with an ingenious and humorous teaching style is preferable. To a large extent, whether a lecture is welcomed by the students or not depends on the way of delivery rather than its content. It’s generally agreed that an interesting interaction is far more enjoyable than a boring monologue.

There is a good side and a bad side to everything, and the selection of teachers by students is no exception. It goes without saying that it can arouse students’ interest in their studies to the largest extent. Such phenomena as being absent from classes or paying no attention to the classes may vanish.

Nevertheless, it can not be denied that it can bring about some side-effects. The management of classes may be in disorder. Some teachers may be warmly welcomed so the number of the students may be too large while other courses may have few participants.

It can be concluded that allowing students to choose their own teachers has both positive and negative effects. What we must do is to make sure that the positive ones are encouraged and negative ones are minimized as far as possible.
