Fresh Food Needed

When Kevon Johnson was 13, he left-Jarnaica (牙买加) to live with his mother and sisters in the US. They live in Hartford, Connecticut. But Johnson started to have a problem with the food in the US.

“I didn’t like the way chicken tasted. It tasted spoiled(坏掉的),” Johnson, now 18, said, “And the fruit tasted like it was picked too soon.”

In his old home in Jamaica, there were goats and chickens everywhere. As for fresh fruit, “I’d just climb up a tree and get it myself.” he said. Here in Hartford however, Johnson found that corner stores around the city smell mostly processed (加工的) foods. And his family really liked the cheap fast food that seems to be everywhere.

Worrying about his family's health and having larger questions about obesity (肥胖), Johnson joined Grow Hartford. This is a school project that grows vegetables in city farms. It helps people know more about fresh healthy food.

Johnson quickly became a top leader (领导者) for Grow Hartford. He worked as a city farmer all through high school. He made speeches for different groups in Hartford. He also suggested tastier and different kinds of school lunches for example, a weekly meal from Chinese or Western Indian Cuisines (饮食). Students would enjoy the different tastes and eat less junk food, he said.

The Hartford schools have accepted a lot of Johnson's suggestions. He was also named the winner of the 2015 Hartford Community Food Security Award because of his excellent
