The whole earth had one language and was of one speech. As they migrated from the east, it happened that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there. They said one to another, ‘Come, let's make bricks, and bake them thoroughly.’

They used bricks for stone, and asphalt for mortar. They said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves, so that we are not scattered across the face of the earth.'

Yahweh came down to see thecity and the tower which the sons of

mankind werebuilding.

Yahweh said,'Look! They are one people, and

they all have onelanguage, and

this is what theybegin to do.'

'Now nothing they plan to do

will beimpossible for them!'

'Come, let us godown there and confuse their

language, sothat they cannot understand each

other's speech.'

From thereYahweh scattered them

abroad acrossthe face of the earth.

And theystopped building

the city.

That is why it's called Babel, because there

Yahweh confused thelanguage of all the earth. From there,

Yahweh scattered themabroad across face of

the earth.

As a result, this story is

sometimes used within a religious context to explain theexistence of many different languages and races.

巴别塔/巴比伦塔/通天塔

(Tower Of Babel),据《圣经》

创世纪( Genesis)第11章记载，

是当时人类联合起来兴建，希望能通往天堂的高塔。

为了阻止人类的计划，上帝让人类说不同的语言，使人类相互之间不能沟通，计划因此失败，人类自此各散东西。此故事试图为世上出现不同语言和种族提供解释。 Babel在希伯来语中意为混乱,可在巴比伦文中却是神的门的意思。

语言是人类交际的重要工具。凡有人类的地方就会有语言。世界上到底有多少种语言呢?据东德出版的《语言学及语言交际工具问题手册》说，现在世界上查明的有 5651种语言。在这些语言中，约有1400多种还没有被人们承认是独立的语言，或者是正在衰亡的语言。在4200多种已被承认的独立的语言中，能得到很好研究的仅 500种，而有1500种几乎还没研究过。

够初步评价不同的译文，并提出自己的看法。
