Should We Be Close Followers of Fashion

Nowadays so many people are crazed about following the fashion as media editors keep presenting the public with "must-have" and "no-no" listings. Some people believe that being in the trend enables them to showcase their individuality. But in my view following the fashion too closely would backfire. We are supposed to keep a distance with the fashion trends. To begin with, the fashion trends are so volatile that we can hardly keep track of them. Fashion trends tend to go in 20-year cycles. Styles favored in the 1980s are likely to re-emerge again two decades later, with a new twist. The fashionable clothes you bought last month may become

out-of-date now. When you are finally resolved to buy the skirts many of your peers raved about several weeks ago, the vogue for the skirts may begin to drop off. As you throw yourself into the fashion, you inevitably waste considerably amount of money and time.

In addition, our individual identity can become spoiled by homogenized clothes, shoulder bags and accessories. In many cases, we are impulse buyers. We purchase them only to show we are not old-fashioned. In other

words, we are not impelled by our own aesthetic point of view to buy them, instead, we just follow suit. As a result, numerous fashion products are now embraced by the masses, often with little thought to suitability or personal imagination. Wearing the "in" label therefore may dilute our individuality and leads to a contradiction to the purpose of fashion- individual style presenting human uniqueness; instead, we become fashion clones.

On the whole, it usually pays to view the fashion trends with rationality and prudence.
