There was a small town near a mountain. People there loved their town very much. And they grew many plants on the mountain. Water in the rivers there was very clear. There were many fish in them. And the air was clean. People there lived a simple life, but they were very happy.
After a few years, some people in the town started to cut down the plants to sell for money, but they didn’t grow new plants. There were some people from cities coming to visit the town. People began to get some animals as food to treat (款待) the visitors. Of course, they made lots of money. But nobody realized (意识到) what the town would be like in the future.
As time went on, there were fewer plants and animals. The water became dirty. The visitors were fewer and fewer. After a few years, people there knew they must stop destroying (破坏) nature. They would like to live the happy life as they had before. So they began to grow new plants. However, it is easy to cut down the plants but difficult to grow. It took them a really long time to make their town beautiful again. After that, everyone knew the importance of protecting the environment. And the town became beautiful again.

When Jane Goodall was 2 years old, her father gave her a toy chimpanzee (黑猩猩). This began her lifelong love with animals. As a child, even her favorite books were about animals. By the age of 10, she dreamed of going to Africa to live with animals.
When she was 23, Goodall left her home in England for Kenya. There she met Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous paleontologist (古生物学者) and anthropologist (人类学者). Dr. Leakey was very pleased with Goodall and asked her to work as his helper.
In 1960, Goodall arrived in Tanzania to begin her research. It was very difficult for the first few months as the chimpanzees ran away from Goodall. But later, she got on well with the chimpanzees and they allowed her to get closer. After a meeting about chimpanzees in Chicago, she knew she had to do something for the environment to protect chimpanzees. Today, Jane Goodall is one of the most famous primatologists (灵长类动物学家) in the world. She travels around the world every year. She wants everyone to know animals are our friends and we should protect the environment.
