Though the definition of the public school is vague, the kind of person the public school meat to form is a faithful follower of traditional British upper-middle and upper class. The public school is a traditional school in Britain for leadership education, thus it aimed to develop leaders by take the social cultural into account in their curriculum, select essences from different traditions‘ and remold them for a novel purpose and so on.

Naturally, these public schools‘ spirits includes democracy, character training and personality. Firstly, just as John Dewey‘s view that schools should train leaders who would transform societies to be truly democratic .Thus, the public devotes to create a democratic school environment where students can learn the concept by experience. Just as the theory of ―learning by doing‖, they develop the character of social transformers through the experiences of school life. Secondly, the public school often stresses character training. They believe that any form of education could not be considered complete unless it includes character development. Because character contains the ability and the confidence to act as a member of the elite, they make their students thorough various aspects of school life, and students are to internalize specific kinds of attitudes through experience. What‘s more, the basic agreement is that the school is the place to develop students‘ capability not just in intellectual aspect but also in personality aspect. So the public school designs the school life carefully and intends to develop characters that would internalize the dominant values of the society and maintain the status quo.

You may ask a question that how can the public school develop its spirits. The answer to this question is that –team sports which are called ―games‖. The British think that sports played an important role in the balance of the development of mind, hearts, and body. They believe the player who demonstrated the spirits of sportsmanship, perseverance and unconditional loyalty to the school or boarding house should be highly honored. In addition, if the students can learn to think little of himself but much of his eleven or his school in the games, that will be better. In a word, the purpose of the public school education is to develop team spirits. What‘s more, the public school also cares about the personal influence of the teacher and older

pupils—entrust with responsibility and disciplinary power to create a social life. Tradition,in which standards of judgment are formed and right attitudes acquired almost unconsciously through imbibing the spirit and atmosphere of the school to develop its spirit.
