Optimizing Citrix XenDesktop Performance and Density Using Veloxum

Introduction

This document is intended to provide advanced technical personnel - architects, engineers and consultants – with data regarding the performance improvement to a Citrix XenDesktop hosted VM-based (VDI) solution using Veloxum’s server infrastructure optimization software with Active,

Continuous Optimization (ACO). This document presents the findings of internal Veloxum testing that simulated a large enterprise deployment of VDI desktops both before and after introduction of Veloxum. This document provides data generated from a sample deployment, in which a single OS image is provisioned to multiple unique desktop users to test the limits of reasonable performance with and without Veloxum.

Veloxum Overview

Veloxum’s founders started the company with the vision to apply active, continuous optimization to manage complex IT environments for optimum performance and utilization. Veloxum actively and continuously optimizes physical and virtual infrastructure by optimizing OS and application settings. It leverages the existing systems and infrastructure by tuning the various components within their manufacturer supported settings. The solution enables IT organizations to maximize performance, increase workload density, and minimize virtualization costs, dramatically reducing Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Executive Summary

Veloxum internally tested a representational VDI deployment designed for availability and simulated real-world workloads using XenDesktop 4 and Veloxum’s optimization software with Active, Continuous Optimization (ACO). The end-to-end environment included a varying number of Windows XP virtual desktops that testers could increase or decrease to determine the maximum number of simultaneous sessions the infrastructure could support. Tests run using Citrix VDI and Veloxum together showed that the combination increased active sessions by close to 30%. This metric directly translates to a commensurate cost savings per client in a maximally configured VDI environment.

Key Findings

Tests run using Citrix VDI and Veloxum together showed the following benefits versus Citrix VDI alone, as reported by LoginVSI.

Increased active sessions by 28.6%.

Reduced average response time by 25%.

Lowered average disk read latency by 33%.

Methodology And Workload

Workload Details – LoginVSI from Login Consultants

Understanding true user workflows and adequately planning server and storage capacity are critical factors in designing a scalable VDI deployment that simultaneously sets a usable standard for user experience.

Testers used a widely available workload simulation tool, LoginVSI 3.0 (Beta), from Login Consultants, throughout system testing to accurately represent real-world user workflows. This tool takes

measurements of in-session response time, providing a way to measure the expected user experience, including login storms. (A “login storm” is a test scenario that simulates users simultaneously coming into work and logging on.)

The LoginVSI benchmarking methodology calculates an index based on the amount of simultaneous sessions run on a single machine.
