In what ways would you impact Owen as a student and as an alumnus/alumna? How would you create change within the Owen community? (Not required for MMHC and EMBA applicants.)

With a strong reputation in finance, flexible curriculum and distinguished professors in this field, the Master of Science program in finance is the most suitable choice for me in my way to become a remarkable expert in Finance. Without such a pre-job exposure to the complexities of opinions and backgrounds, no Business student can succeed to face the mosaics of real business world. In this world-class environment of finance study, I am eager to play a distinctive role with my own academic strengths and practical experiences.

As a student with college major in Business Administration, I underwent more rigorous trainings than most peers in business fundamentals, including but not limited to macro/micro economics, accounting, corporate finance, business administrations and applied statistics. My solid academic background will meet Vanderbilt’s general entrance requirements for graduate study. For the consecutive two years in esteemed XX University of China that is famous for its intensive course hours and rigid exam scoring system, I have topped the class with an excellent GPA of XX. My fortes in advanced mathematics, with a particularly strong grasp of calculus and probabilities, enabled me to conduct graduate level researches on finance subjects, including Public Finance International Comparison, Foreign Investment’s Promotion to Chinese Industry Optimization, and so forth. In future MSF classrooms, I believe my strengths of these business subjects can be readily drawn upon, as an effective addition to our class discussion, completions of team projects and tackling difficult finance or economics problems.

Then, at the start of my junior year, I successfully transferred to XX University in Canada to broaden my academic knowledge and perfect my own talents in a multicultural environment. Classes are challenging and rewarding. They examine issues facing companies today and teach strategies on how to deal with and solve managerial problems. The approach that professors take challenges me to think critically from many different perspectives and look at both the local and global impact companies have. An excellent academic performance, a strong proficiency in English and a good ability for communication soon bring me a closer relation with my professors. I became the sole teaching assistant from international undergraduates in the Department of Business Administration.

A good grasp of finance or economics basics is just one of the fortes in my repertoire. I excelled in advanced mathematics, with a particularly strong grasp of linear algebra, calculus and probabilities. Quantitative skills and model analysis has undoubtedly become a necessary tool for modern management science study and practice. I’ve taken interest in economic mathematic models, often collecting and researching model cases of the current economic events. In the first year of college, being good at

observing, analyzing and solving real problems by using mathematical thinking, I became a key member of the school group of mathematical modeling. Therefore, I can, in MS program, act as a “math or stat assistant” to all of my classmates, sharing my mathematical knowledge and offering my wisdoms of using application software of STAT or SPSS. The more I put these specialties into use, the more I can learn and reinforce my understanding of them. I believe the class will find my forte useful and helpful.

Learning in business subjects must go hands in hands with practice. I also want to share with my classes in Vanderbilt MS in Finance the work experiences in consulting firm. In 20XX, after rounds of interviews and assessments, I was assigned to the XX Investment program of XX Company. In my team I worked as the sole undergraduate intern. XX hoped, by means of buying shares, to enter the biggest mining companies like China Mine-metals Corporation. What we should do was to help XX acquire the desired targets and provide the possibility for their investment. In most cases, I needed to interview many business men, many of whom are outstanding experts of investment to mining industry. My job involved much financial knowledge and needed a good communication skill as well as a good flexibility during negotiation. During this internship, I found real enjoyment although I just could sleep 6 hours a day in order to complete my work. I had extensive interaction with a group of high-caliber professionals in an exciting and collaborative work environment. This experience made me realize that the most direct way to do remarkable things is by working with remarkable people and having remarkable friends.

I shall share with my class in Vanderbilt what I have gleaned from this valuable experience in XX Company, as I for the first time witness and feel the intensity and pressures of business world. Working into late hours aside, I find the most nerve-breaking or daunting moments are those when you do not know how to cut the first slice on a thorny new problem. Ask, always ask. Learn, and learn it quick. I think this is the asset that I will bring to the Vanderbilt, and more importantly my experiences how I overcome the fear and solve these great challenges as well.

Determination to learn and strong sense of responsibility, in my view, are equally important to one’s success in business as a good command of exceptional skills and knowledge. Here, I will carry such a learning heart and eager mind to Vanderbilt, where I will be joined and coached by more talents with perse educational and work backgrounds.
