Unit Two

The Power of Words

Work in pairs to answer the following questions. How did the author feel when he received Don’s note?

SampleThe author felt greatly inspired, for he was just a teenager and Don’s good words gave him both confidence and encouragement.

Do you think it necessary to write uplifting notes to other people?

Sample Yes, it’s quite necessary, because such notes bring warmth and reassurance to those who need encouragement in a world too often cold and full of competition. Besides, we all need a boost from time to time, and a few lines of praise can even change life.

According to the text, how to write uplifting notes?

Sample We only need to be willing to express our appreciation. In other words, we should be sincere when writing notes and letters that lift spirits and warm hearts. The words should often be short, specific and spontaneous.
