Book Review of The Joy Luck Club

The Joy Luck Club is about the relationship between daughters and mothers in the light of a Chinese American. The book mainly explores the tender and tenacious bond between four daughters and their mothers. And the author spent large number of pages describing the conflicts between the daughters and the mothers. The disagreements they held on the same things directly lead to their conflicts. However, these disagreements are just superficial, behind the surfaces ,there are fundamental reasons and differences. It was the gap between different generations and the clash of different cultures and different values of society. At the same time, what cannot be ignored is the deep and natural bonding between the mothers and daughters, which even cannot be cut by the severe conflicts. And this subject controlled and went through the whole book.

In this book there are various kinds of conflicts——conflicts between the daughters and their mothers, between the daughters, between the mothers, between the Chinese parenting and American principles, among which the last is the key conflict dominating the other conflicts. The four mothers are Suyuan Woo, An-mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, Ying-ying St.Clair, who are immigrants in America from China. And the four girls are Jing-mei “June” Woo, Rose Hsu Jordan, Waverly Jong , Lena St.Clair. And Suyuan Woo and three other women who are suffering from fear and pan caused by the war started the joy luck club to throw their minds back

to the good times about the past and look forward to their good times yet to come. And after Suyuan came to America , she and another four Chinese women again started the joy luck club. Maybe it was a way to in memory of their unspeakable tragedies they have left in China and hopes they couldn’t begin to express in their fragile English. Quite unlike their mothers, the four girls were grown up in America since the day of their birth and the American society provided them with American principles and American values. And they have accustomed to the American living style. What is more, the mothers want Americanized children but except them to think like Chinese while the racial discrimination in America forced children to reject to the Chinese culture.

As a mother, Suyuan hoped that her daughter can realize the dream that she had ever had but never realized. She expected a lot from her daughter so that Eveready she tested her with a lot of intelligent questions in the hope of finding that her daughter was a genius in some field. To her disappoint, her daughter find it no interesting and even boring to handle this questions. But her mother did not give up, it occurred to her that her daughter can make a name by playing piano when she saw a girl playing piano on TV. Though she couldn’t afford to buy a piano, she managed to ask a retired piano teacher to teach June by working freely for the teacher. Unfortunately, June quit playing piano after a failure of performance, which caused a quarrel with her mother. And she seemed never fully

understand her mother. Maybe it’s the so-called generation gap.

As for Lindo, she is a daughter who is always obedient to her mother. So when her mother arranged for her a marriage, she accepted it and kept her promise to her mother though she did not like it. And she stereotyped daughters to be meek and obedient. In contrast, Waverly is an independent-minded and intelligent woman, when she was young, she showed her talent in playing chess and later became successful in career. But she is quite annoyed by her mother’s constant criticism and her showing off well into her life, which often made her embarrassed and shamed. And she find herself restrained by her subconscious fear of letting her mother down.

An-mei Hsu is the mother of Rose. And she didn’t understand why her daughter prefer to see the psychologist rather than tell her mother her trouble when she was trapped in her miserable marriage. And Rose is passive and a bit of a perfectionist. After her marriage she was too dependent on her husband to make her own choices.

Ying-ying is being educated by her conservative family that girls should always be gentle. Thus she developed a passive quality and learned to repress her feelings. And she was horrified that her daughter Lena has inherited her passive behaviors and trapped herself in a loveless marriage with a controlling husband. And she also confused why they spend so much in buying so many useless and odd things in their house.

As for the mothers, though they were friends, they compared with each other with their skills in cooking and their children’s any achievements. And between children there were also wars from seizing lovely toys to laughing at each other’s failure.

We can see clearly the clash of different two cultures as well. Take the cooking of Lindo as an example, when Lindo brought dish that she is best at to the table, she said”this dish not salt enough, no flavor, it is too hard to eat”, which is a Chinese way of modesty and irony. But Waverly’s boy friend, an American, couldn’t understand it and even criticized her dish and he himself felt he must leave good impression on his parents. This apparently showed the differences between the Chinese culture and America culture. Besides, after Waverly moved into a new department, Lindo is not happy with the department and often visits her daughter without reminder. For her, it is natural to see a daughter whenever she misses her. However, Waverly didn’t want her to come without expectation, which will make what she has already planted in a mess and cause great inconvience to her life.

Although they never completely resolve their differences and problms, the love between them awlays …… 此处隐藏:6836字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
