Eight athletes sat in wheelchairs on a racing track. The starter fired the starting signal and the
race got under way. The athletes pushed their wheelchairs at amazing speeds along the track. The
crowd cheered and the winner raised his hands in victory.
This race is just one of the events that take place at the Paralympic Games. These games are an international sporting event for athletes who are physically disabled. They take place every four
years just after the Olympic Games and are usually held in the same place. The name “Paralympic” comes from the Latin word “para” meaning “with”. and the word “Olympic” which comes from the name of the Greek city where the first Olympic Games were held.
The idea of a sports competition for disabled people dates back to the Second World War. The British Stoke Mandeville Hospital, which looked after wounded soldiers and pilots with back problems, held a sports event in 1 948 as part of the treatment for their in juries, three years later, a group of competitors from Holland joined the Games and the idea of an international competition was born.
The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1 960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries took part. In 1 976, the first Winter Paralympics were held for disabled athletes in winter sports. In 2008, the largest Paralympics so far was held in Beijing, China. More than four thousand athletes from 1 47 countries competed in basketball, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair racing and some other 1 6 sports.
