Preface

ThisisVolume4oftheFDSTechnicalReferenceGuide.Volume1describesthemathematicalmodelandnumericalmethod.Volumes2and3documentpastandpresentmodelveri cationandvalidationwork,respectively.InstructionsforusingFDSarecontainedinaseparateUser’sGuide[1].

ThevolumesthatmakeuptheFDSTechnicalReferenceGuidearebasedinpartontheASTME1355,StandardGuideforEvaluatingthePredictiveCapabilityofDeterministicFireModels[2].ASTME1355outlinestheprocessofassessingtheaccuracyofa remodel.Volumes1through3aretheresultofthisevaluationprocess.Themainpurposeofthepresentvolumeistodescribetheprocessbywhichthemodelsoftwareisdevelopedandmaintained.AmodelsuchasFDScannotremainstatic.Asprogressismadein rescience,themodelneedstobeupdatedandimproved,butstillshowntoreliablypredictthekindsofphenomenaforwhichitwasoriginallydesigned.
