Pearl Harbor in Hawaii is one of the major military bases of the United States. A surprise attack was carried out there by the Japanese in 1941, which led to the US coming into the Second World War.

On 26th November 1941, 39 Japanese ships set sail for the Hawaiian Islands. On 7th December, they attacked the US airfields and the US ships in Pearl Harbor.

At around 8,10am, the United States Ship (USS) Arizona was heavily bombed and eventually exploded. In less than 9 minutes, the ship sank with 1177 men on board. Many other American ships were sunk or badly damaged. Almost 200 American airplanes were destroyed and about 3000 American soldiers were killed or wounded in just a few hours.

The next day, US President Franklin Roosevelt declared war against Japan.

Hiroshima is a modern Japanese city, with lots of cars, tall buildings and plenty of shops.

However, this city was not always so modern and suffered extremely in the past. On 6th August 1945, near the end of World War II, the US Army Air Corps dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb caused great hardship for the Japanese people destroying nearly 70 per cent of Hiroshima's buildings and damaging many others.

At the time of the bomb, there were about 350 000 people living in Hiorshima. More than 60 000 of them were killed by the bomb, and many more were made homeless. Many of those who survived were exposed to radiation, and later died of cancer or other diseases caused by the bomb. Even today, the effects of the bomb still exist.

World Languages

There are thousands of different languages in the world. People who speak different

languages do not understand each other. If everyone in the world spoke the same language, the world would be quite different.

First, if everyone spoke the same language, it would be very easy for different nations to communicate and understand each other. We would need no translation or interpretation at international conferences, so a lot of money would be saved.

Second, if everyone spoke the same language, people would live in harmony with each other. People who speak different languages often believe in different religions and this often causes misunderstandings and even wars.

Third, everybody speaking the same language would improve cultural and economic exchanges between nations. Presently, the difference in language makes cross-cultural communication and international trade difficult. So if everyone spoke the same language, communication and trade between nations could be done more easily.

Throughout history, different man-made languages have been invented. Of these, Esperanto is the most widely spoken.

Esperanto was invented by a Polish doctor named Zamenh of in1880.It is based on the characteristics of Latin and other European languages. Dr Zamenh though that if everyone spoke the same language, there would be fewer problems in the world.

Esperanto is a very regular language. All the worlds are spelt the same way they are pronounced. All nouns end in the latter \in \Esperanto, \means warmth or heat, \means warms or hot and \

Esprranto was not intended to replace any natural language, but was intended as an international helping language. However, English is now so widely used that it is regarded by many as the international language.
