TheWorldBanksaysmostdevelopingcountrieshavemadeimportantprogresstowardtheUnitedNations’MillenniumDevelopmentGoals.

InApril,theinternationallenderreleaseditsyearlyWorldDevelopmentIndicators.Hundredsofindicatorsareusedtomeasureprogressinareassuchaseducation,health,poverty,theenvironmentandtrade.

OneoftheMillenniumDevelopmentGoalsistoreducebyhalfthenumberofpeoplelivinginextremepovertybytwenty fteen.

Outofeighty-sevencountrieswithdataavailable,forty-nineseemlikelytoreachthatgoal.“Extremepoverty”isde nedasearninglessthanonedollaraday.

Anothergoalistomakeeducationavailabletoallyoungchildren.Thereportshowsthatintwothousandseven,sevenoutoftenchildrenlivedindevelopingcountriesthathadmetorwereclosetomeetingthatgoal.

Also,thirty-ninecountrieshaveachievedorarelikelytoachievethegoalofreducingchilddeathrates.Thetargetisatwo-thirdsreductionbytwenty fteen.

AndthereportfromtheWorldBankshowsthe rstreductioninAIDS-relateddeaths.

Butevenwithalltheprogress,thereisstillalongwaytogotoreachalleightgoalsapprovedbyworldleaderstenyearsago.Thisisespeciallytrueinsub-SaharanAfrica,whichfallsbehindonallofthegoals.

HesaidtherewasadecadeormoreofverysloweconomicprogressinthenineteenninetiesinAfrica.Therewerecivilwarsandotherdisruptions.Andtherewaspoorgovernanceinmanycountriesthathasnotpermittedtheeconomytogrowandhasnotallowedpoorpeopletoshareinthebene tsofgrowth.

Still,hepointstosomehopefulsigns–includingalargereductioninthechilddeathrateinMalawi.

TheWorldBankalsolaunchedanew“opendatainitiative.”Thebankwillmakeitsdataonlivingconditionsaroundtheworldpubliclyavailable.O cialssaythiswillmakeiteasiertomeasurethee ectsofpoliciesanddevelopnewsolutionstohelptheworld’spoor.

Americanfarmers rstplantedgeneticallyengineeredcropsinnineteenninety-six.Todayeightypercentofthecroplandforsoybeans,maizeandcottonintheUnitedStatesistransgenic.Geneticengineeringaddsorchangesgenesinaplanttoproducedesiredqualities.

TheUnitedStatesisoneoftwenty- vecountrieswherefarmersplantedge-neticallyengineeredcropsintwothousandnine.Anagriculturalbiotechnol-ogygroupsaysplantingdecreasedinEurope.Buttheamountofcroplandplantedwiththecropsrosebyanestimatedsevenpercentworldwide.

TheNationalResearchCouncil,partoftheNationalAcademiesinWash-ington,recentlypublishedastudy.Thestudyexaminedhowgeneticallyengineeredcropshavea ectedfarmingintheUnitedStates.Itfoundthatmanyfarmershavebetterharvests,betterweedcontrolandfewerlossesfrominsectdamagecomparedtotraditionalcrops.

LaReesaWolfenbargerisaUniversityofNebraskabiologyprofessorandamemberofthecommitteethatwrotethereport.Shesaystheyfoundthatgeneticallyengineeredcropscanbebetterfortheenvironment.

Forexample,shenotedthatcropsdesignedtoresistdamagebyglyphosateneedfewerpesticidesthataremoretoxictothesoil.Glyphosateisachem-icalusedinRound-Upandotherweedkillingproducts.

Butsomefarmershaveusedsomuchglyphosatethatanumberofkindsofweedscannowresistit.DavidErvinofPortlandStateUniversityinOregonledthecommitteethatwrotethereport.ProfessorErvinsaysthismeansthatsomefarmersareagainusingthemoretoxicherbicidestocontrol
