Chapter I. Introduction

Part I .The introduction of the author

Ernest Hemingway (1899--1961) is a famous American novelist. He, the second of six children, was born in a well-to-do family on July 21, 1899in Oak Park, Illinois. On July 2, 1961 he shot himself with his favorite shotgun in Idaho Ketchum house. The succinct and concentrated prose style of his early works strongly influenced many British and American writers for decades. His father was a successful doctor and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Going out with his father, Hemingway developed a way of life, and learned such virtues as courage and endurance. His mother was a music teacher and often took her children to sing songs in Christian church. As a little boy, he was deep influenced by the good music and arts. These loving parents had a deep impact on his later writing career. His mother gave the temperament of his vulgarity and outstanding artistic talent. His father gave his burly appearance and superb sport skills. It can be said that Hemingway enjoyed a happy childhood. His entire primary school age was very excellent. He loved to use his brain to imagine, and made up stories. When he finished his study in middle school, he began his writing career as a reporter for the Kansas City Star. When he was 18 years old, he was sent to Italy to serve as a Red Cross ambulance driver in World War I, so most of his works were related to war. He was very popular in 20s and 30s of the twentieth Century and was recognized as a representative writer, he was also well-known as the most talented novelist during the first half of the twentieth Century. He won the 1954 Nobel Prize; he participated in the Second World War and the Spanish Civil War, later he suffered from a variety of illnesses, and mental depression. In 1961 he died.

1920s was the early age for Hemingway's writing, he wrote In Our Time, The Torrents of Spring, Men Without Women and the novel the Sun Also Rises, a Farewell to Arms, and other works.

In the 30s and 40s of this century, he created out the images of the anti-fascist fighter who fought and sacrificed for people .Those includes the novels “Fifth Column‖and ―for whom the Bell Toll‖. In 1950s,the image of "tough guy"was created by Hemingway, Santiago was a deliberate example, representing "one person can destroy him, but never defeated him" ("the Old Man and the Sea" 1950).

He is also known as the American spiritual monument. He is a myth in American literature. He is a glamorous public hero. He is so proud because he acts out the theme of his own books.

Part II. Comments on Hemingway’s writing style

Dong hengxun thinks that Hemingway has created out a lot of fearless, death-defying ―tough guy‖ characters, who sometimes are confined to the narrow personal circle, but sometimes struggle for higher target. This action is very meaningful. Hemingway‘s short stories belong to a unique personal style, which is different from Maupassant and Chekhov‘s writing style. Hemingway deletes all non-essential things in order to achieve maximum simplicity and implication.

The famous English critic—H.E.Bates made an accurate judgment on Hemingway. He thought Hemingway was a man with an axe. He tried his best to cut down all obstacles. What Hemingway went for was that direct pictorial contact between eye and object, between object and reader. To get it, he cut out a whole forest of verbosity. He got back to clean fundamental

growth. He trimmed off explanation, discussion, even comment; he hacked off all metaphorical floweriness; he just gave the reader a clear vision.

In addition, Hemingway‘s simple direct writing style also affects future generations. He rarely uses the cosmetic phrase; instead, he uses the concise sentence to tell the story of the courage, the strength and the dignity which are displayed by some people in their lives.

Part III. The plot of the Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea was created at the end of Hemingway‘s writing career. "Time will show that this novel would be the most brilliant medium-length novel for our time"said by Faulkner. And the novel was considered as the best masterpiece of Hemingway. ―The style he created in his early work, such as In Our Time and the Sun also Rises, was almost too good. Like the style of certain painters, it tended to become a manner, rather than a flexible way of responding to experience and conveying fresh insights through words.‖ Among all his works, The Old Man and the Sea is the most t …… 此处隐藏:17310字,全部文档内容请下载后查看。喜欢就下载吧 ……
