Lawrencehatestheindustrialdegradationofthelandscape,becauseofwhereheisbornandatwhatstageofEnglishindustrialhistory,issopoignantanddeep2felt.Hethinksthatindustrializationnotonlyhasgreateffectonthelandscape,butalsouponpeo2plethemselves.Itcausesinmanypeoplethe“utterdeathofthehumanintuitivefaculty,killingofftheemotionsandthecapacitytorespondtonaturalbeautyandthelovelinessinotherhumanbeings”(Champion,1989:12).
