Self – discipline

An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer his plans to leave the house building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career. When the carpenter finished his work and the employer came to inspect the house and handed the front-door key to the carpenter. \is your house,\he said, \gift to you.\

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

As you know, our class will have a speech contest on environment protection with Class One on December 4th. Before it takes place, we will invite Dr Li from Tsinghua University to give us a report on the environment problem and he will also tell us about the improvement in environment protection in recent years in China. The report will begin at 2:00 pm. on Friday, November 30th in the auditorium on the third floor in the teaching building. I’m sure we can get enough information from his report to make good preparations for the coming speech contest. Everyone should be there on time and we will have a discussion after the report.

A carpenter decided to retire but promised to build the last house for his employer. He was absent-minded and didn’t take it seriously when he was building it. But finally his employer gave it to him as a gift, which made the carpenter regretful.

I firmly believe that self-discipline matters more than IQ or diligence for success. As the saying goes, the first and best victory is to conquer the self. Life is a continuous process of fighting and one cannot achieve success without self-discipline. The above story reminds me of an unforgettable experience during my childhood. I once took part in a summer camp and the training was really tough. At the end of the camp, everyone was so tired that they left the camp with lots of rubbish. However, I offered to stay behind to help the trainers to clean the rubbish, regardless of the extreme tiredness. To my great surprise, I was told that cleaning the rubbish was the last test of the camp! I was the only one who was announced qualified.

The experience makes a big difference to my studies and my life. I think self-discipline is surely an important factor in my achieving success in learning English. Therefore, don’t let a lack of self-discipline be an obstacle to your success.
