Canada is a very large country. It is bigger than China. China is the third largest country in the world. Canada is the second largest. It has an area of nearly 10 million sq. km. Canada has a very long coastline. To the west is the Pacific Ocean. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean. The Arctic Ocean is in the north. There are very many islands off the Pacific coast and off the Arctic coast. The biggest one in the west is Vancouver Island. In the east there is New Foundland, and in the Arctic Ocean the biggest island s are Baffin Island and Victoria Island.(Greenland is not part of Canada. It is a part of Denmark, a country in northern Europe.)

Canada has a long border with the U.S.A. in the south. In the northwest Canada borders on the American state of Alaska. Canada is a northern country. The Arctic Circle (Latitude 16°N) passes through the northern part. In the south, half of the border with the U.S.A. follows line of latitude 49°N.

Mr. Brown worked in a factory of a small town. He had been there for twenty years before one day he was sent to the capital for important business. He was quite excited because he had never been there before. Before he set off, he asked his wife and three daughters if they wanted him to buy something for them in London. Mrs. Brown began to think it over and then she said she wished her husband would be able to buy a nice umbrella for her, and so did their three daughters. As he was afraid he would forget it, he drew an umbrella on a piece of paper. To his regret, he lost it at the station.

On the train Mr. Brown sat opposite to an old woman. The woman's umbrella was so nice that he carefully looked at it and said to himself not to forget to buy a few umbrellas like it. When the train arrived at the station in London, he said good-bye to the old woman, took his bag and her umbrella and was going to get off.

"Wait a minute, sir,” shouted the old woman. "That's my umbrella!"

Now Mr. Brown noticed that he had taken her umbrella. His face tur ned

red at once and said in a hurry, "Oh, I'm very sorry, Madam! I didn't mean it!"

Seven days later Mr. Brown left the capital. To his surprise, he met the old woman and sat opposite to her again. Looking at the four umbrellas, the old woman was satisfied with herself. “It seems that I had a better result th an the other four women.” She thought.

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages(薪金).

On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, "If one

of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages."

The sailors had heard about the captain's cheating, so they didn't trust (信任) him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.

"You are cheating," the captain said to the sailor. "The fire's warming you."

"But it's half a mile away!" said the sailor.

"A fire's fire," answered the captain. "I have won."

The sailor came out of the water, and said, "Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken."

"I can," answered the captain.

"If you cook this chicken," said the sailor, "I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can't, you will give me your ship."

The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, "Where's the fire?"

"There it is," answered the sailor. "On the shore."

"But it's half a mile away," said the captain angrily.
