I. Useful Information

Ever since the time of Sigmund Freud, the founder of modern psychiatry, experts felt there was a strong relationship between emotions and health. Freud, a medical doctor, said that certain physical needs must be met to maintain mental health. These include physical safety, food, and, especially, sexual gratification. Some think that Freud overemphasized sex. He also said that a poor emotional adjustment such as a repressed conflict can cause psychosomatic illnesses. These are illnesses with real physical symptoms but no physical cause.

II. Preparation

1. On the Stage

Directions: Work in groups to organize a mime production in which only body language and gestures are used to convey a particular emotion. For each performance, the other students are asked to guess the emotion expressed. Samples

Good health has come to mean more than simply the absence of illness. What else does good health mean? What determines health?

Sample

Good health has come to mean more than simply the absence of illness. Good health also means mental alertness and muscularity. One who has good health is intelligent, strong, energetic, quick-minded, and full of vigor.

There are many factors contributing to good health. First of all, one shouldn’t smoke and shouldn’t drink excessively. Secondly, one should have a healthy diet and avoid eating and drinking too much at one time. One should eat breakfast every day and eat very little between meals. Thirdly, exercise is extremely important for good

health. If one takes exercise regularly, good health won’t be too far away. Fourthly, enough sleep is also very important. One should sleep seven to eight hours a day. Lack of sleep will dull one’s mind and one’s body will eventually give out. Finally, one should get regular medical care. Regular check-ups are necessary.

IV. Passage Reading

1. Finishing reading the passage within 16 minutes, and point out the main idea of the passage.

2. Filling the blanks in the reading comprehension exercises.

3.Language Points

1) It is not just stress that can do damage. (l.16)

此句为强调句,结构为 “it is ….that ” ,如果强调的是人,也可以用 “it is ….who”。如 “Paul came here in September.”这个句子可以有两种强调句型:

It was Paul that came here in September.

It was Paul who came here in September.

下面的句子中,被强调的是人称代词,用what和who有细微差别:

It was I who found him there.

It was me that found him there.

2) they reduced their visits to the doctor by 36 percent (l.30~31)

If something increases or decreases by a particular amount, that amount is gained or lost.

e.g. Villent crime had increased by 10 percent since last year.

Their pay has been cut by one-third.

3) which in turn gives them more understanding of the situation (l.40)

The phrase “in turn” has two meanings. In the passage, it means “as a result of something”. It also means “one after the other”.

e.g. There were cheers for each of the women as they spoke in turn.

Katherine looked at each face in turn.

4) This helps make more sense of it.( l.45)

This sentence means: Writing about negative and unpleasant events gives one a better understanding of the situation.

5) Another interesting study……than those with fewer. (l.52~54)

In this sentence, there are two object clauses: one is “that the more perse your social network, the better”; the other is “that people who have a number of different social relationships have a lower risk of getting colds than those with fewer”.
